by Tom Savage
In loving memory of Jennifer Jaffee,
from all of us in the Friday Night Club
Acknowledgments
This is a work of fiction, and I have used actual places and organizations fictitiously. I’ve also invented places, including the village of Pinède with its busy churchyard, the unnamed seaside village with the Lucky Dolphin pub, the airfield on the North Sea, and the country house in Norfolk. I never name Bill Howard’s organization or that of my terrorists, but they’re fictitious too. London, Paris, Besançon, and Sedgeford are real, however, and I hope I’ve done them justice. I would like to thank Gary Stronge, the parks engagement officer for the London Borough of Camden, for answering questions and helping me with details about the beautiful Russell Square Gardens where two crucial scenes take place.
I’m truly indebted to my wonderful editor, Dana Isaacson, and everyone at Penguin Random House/Alibi who whipped this novel into shape and sent it out into the world. I particularly thank my copyeditor, Dianna Stirpe, for correcting a multitude of sins and suggesting a multitude of improvements.
My agent, Robin Rue, and her colleague at Writers House, Beth Miller, continue to amaze me with their support. I’m grateful for the folks in the Writers House eBook department, especially Julie Trelstad and Bakara Wintner.
My webmaster, Beth Tindall of Cincinnati Media, continues to keep me up and running on the Interwebs.
My love to my sister, Marcia McDevitt, and the rest of my family. My thanks to my writing group, Betsy Harding and S. J. Rozan. And, as always, the Friday Night Club: Sharon Bogart, Tina (“T”) Meyerhoff, Kathy Pontillo, Larry Pontillo, S. J. Rozan (again!), and the “floating” Friday Nighters—John Douglas, Andrea Knutson, Skip Richards, and Ann Romeo.
The Friday Night Club will never be the same without our dear friend and host, the late Jennifer Jaffee, and this novel is dedicated to her memory. We miss you, Jen.
