  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

  James Taylor MA (Hons) FRSA studied at the Universities of St. Andrews and Manchester. Formerly Victorian Paintings Specialist at Phillips Fine Art Auctioneers, London, he was for more than ten years a curator of paintings, drawings and prints, exhibition organiser and corporate membership manager of the National Maritime Museum (NMM) in Greenwich.

  Since 1999, he has been a freelance art consultant, author and also lecturer for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). His publica
tions include Marine Painting (Studio Editions, 1995), Yachts on Canvas (Conway, 1998), The Voyage of the Beagle (Conway and Naval Institute Press, 2008) and Careless Talk Costs Lives – Fougasse and the Art of Public Information (Conway, 2010).

  James Taylor is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Sussex on the ‘Landscape and Figure Draughtsman’ William Westall (1781–1850), who was the first professional landscape artist to circumnavigate Australia on Captain Matthew Flinders’ voyage in HMS Investigator, 1801–1803. To this end he was appointed a Sir James Caird Fellow at the NMM from October to December 2012.
