"You cannot, Sub-Commander.” And Hoara could already feel him start to pull away from her, using her rank as a way of increasing the distance between them
"If I could,” she insisted, thumping her hand on the rock seat. “Would you come with me?"
"You are asking if I'm willing to spend the rest of my days with you?"
Hoara laughed brokenly. “Let's just try for the next month and see how we go from there."
"You are asking a hypothetical, Sub-Commander. I prefer reality."
He moved, quicker than she thought possible, and caught her face in his hands and in those dark depths she saw—no, not a humanity, for that excluded so many civilised species—she saw a compassion, a depth of feeling that she would have killed to see in another man.
"We have a few hours,” he said, brushing his lips against hers. “Let's not discuss hypotheticals. Let me enjoy you one more time."
And this time there was no holding back. He laid on his back and let her straddle him as she stroked his flesh with frantic hands. With a touch he stilled her and watched the wonder on her face as he stretched and lengthened inside her. Then, with a frown of concentration, one pseudopod extended from his groin and cupped itself around her clitoris, squeezing against it. He held her hands, holding her down against him as she bucked and thrust, letting him bring her to climax upon climax as he pulsed and explored her sex, jerking and stroking her to orgasm until she collapsed, exhausted and sweating, against him.
"You didn't come,” she rasped against his ear, her perspiration brushing his body with dampness.
"It's not important."
He was wrong. Of course it was important. He had lived his life so far thinking he was beneath worth when Hoara knew his integrity was without price. She couldn't let him go, not so soon after finding him.
She shrugged free of his hands and cupped his face, looking into his eyes with intensity.
"I have an idea."

"Sub-Commander?"
"Captain Jaynex, I presume."
"You're out of uniform,” the grizzled, stocky man remarked.
A minor point, Hoara thought, knowing she didn't have much time. The inhabitants of Justice would have seen the bright trail of the shuttle as it shot through the atmosphere, heading for the beach. Even with her brief exposure to Bliss, she knew there were already exploratory parties forming.
"We had to avoid some gangs. We really need to get going, Captain,” she urged as she stepped onto the landing ramp. “The natives here are not the friendliest."
"No need to tell me twice.” His pale eyes roamed her figure and backpack. Then the person behind her, also with a backpack. “So it's just the two of you?"
"Yes. Unfortunately, Lieutenant Sim died in the crash. We buried her near the crash-site.” She turned to look back at the silent young man standing behind her, his dark eyes warm and familiar. It meant accessing the secondary core again and, this time, violating a dead officer's privacy, but the form Toh had assumed was identical to the mission's astro-navigator. She would, she vowed, make amends. Later.
"It's just Lieutenant Hanek and myself,” she told the captain.
Jaynex checked their features against the padd he held in his hand. Despite their damp and bedraggled appearance, they passed inspection. He took one last look around, alert to possible intruders, as he ushered in his passengers then gave a final grunt. “Let's go then."
With the ramp retracted and the door closed, the shuttle lifted off the wet sandy beach of Bliss, now dark with night.

Together with my husband, we have lived and worked in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. We adore our two children and tolerate as necessary evils our two grumpy, fur-shedding cats.
