“And, you know,” Gary said hesitantly, patting his pocket, “my remote.”
“That’s not ruined,” said Frostee. “You know I wouldn’t do you like that, man! I told you, it’s improved. Hit up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right for me.”
Gary fussed with the remote briefly. Inside the black car, a familiar video game soundtrack drifted from the dashboard screen, and Gary’s face lit up. “Is that Leethal Legendz 3?”
Frostee nodded. “On any government-owned screen you want. You’re welcome.”
Gary dove back into the car, and the sounds of electronic punching and kicking began. “Oh!” he shouted after a moment. “Thank you!”
“I’ll see you all tomorrow morning,” said Ms. Nowhere. “I’ve got a surveillance job for you. But I’m sure you’ll find a way to drive a car at it.”
“It’s what we do best,” Echo said.
“And we are the best at what we do,” added Cisco.
As the fleet of cars drove away, leaving the four friends on the beach, Tony, Echo, Cisco, and Frostee climbed up onto Cisco’s truck and got comfortable. Cisco waved down a vendor and bought every hot dog in his cart.
Waves crashed. The sun set. Tony had risked his life today, but now he was full and happy, surrounded by his crew, his family. Rule number one, he thought. Stick together. Rule number two: Trust your family. Rule number three: Follow your heart. Now those were some rules he would always respect.
