A Good Day for Crazy: A Time Travel Mystery Page 11

by L. L. Muir

  “That’s…”

“Ashlynn Garrity. I know. You can imagine how stunned I was when I came face to face with her in a convenience store in present day Idaho, after staring at her painting all my life.” He cleared his throat. “She got away from me that first time. Nearly ran me over, too.”

“How…” He shook his head and accepted the younger man’s help up. “How did she… How did you…” Eventually, he gave up trying to speak and just stared. The painting of the gentleman looked a little like his host. That they could be related was easy to believe.

  But Ashlynn.

“None of us knows how she was able to travel through time. But now that she has disappeared, I finally believe the stories.”

  “Stories?”

“She was known as a prognosticator. And though she couldn’t tell fortunes to save her soul, she did know many historical things before they happened, or so we were told. Apparently, people came from all around to get her to tell their fortunes, she was notoriously wrong.”

Lance smiled as he imagined Ashlynn spinning stories that turned out to be pure fiction. Then his chest threatened to explode when he realized he was buying into a story that absolutely, positively could not be true.

He was in Massachusetts, for hellsakes. Far from home. It was not a good time to lose his grip on reality. But the proof was staring him down. Every iota of that face was Ashlynn, secretly laughing at him, smiling as if she knew very well that someday, he’d be standing there with no choice but to believe in a fantasy.

“I know. It’s hard to swallow,” Bainbridge said, patting him on the shoulder, then handing Lance a short glass with dark liquor in it. “This might help.”

He then poured himself a drink and came back to stand in front of the paintings again.

“The rest of our family think it’s all just a legend started by Alexander here, as an excuse to marry a gypsy. But I could never get past the fact that they knew about Ketchum, Idaho long before Idaho was Idaho. My sister and I were obsessed for years, trying to find a writer with her name. When we realized it had to be a pen name, my sister got a job with a publishing house, hoping to find her that way. Can you imagine my shock when I realized I had a shelf full of books by A.L. Woods?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I think I can.”

  A post-script from the author…

Never fear. Alexander and Ashlynn Bainbridge, once Lord and Lady Beaumont, lived happily, though accidentally, ever after. They never had that third kiss—they skipped right over it and went for their fourth.

As for the surplus phantoms of Ashlynn’s future fictional characters, they’re still wandering around Ketchum, Idaho, waiting for someone to write their tales.

  THE END

  Note from the author…

  Dear Reader,

I hope you liked the detour from my other series. This was a story that hit me like lightning. I had to drop everything and write it, and I found great joy doing it. It wasn’t my usual romance, but maybe you liked it anyway.

GOOD DAY FOR CRAZY was a self-indulgent project that has rejuvenated me and left me hungry to continue in this wonderful world of endless possibilities. I hope you will join me for more.

  Thanks again for playing!
