The line when dead, and Jordan collapsed on the floor. It was one thing to think that her father might hurt Drew, but an entirely different one to hear it. “Go tell the others,” Nick ordered Alex, “tell them to go to the old mill.”
Alex’s eyes got big, then he took off across the kitchen, and the last she saw of him was a tail as he jumped off the porch and went streaking into the night. Jordan got to her feet. “Let’s go; we only have ten minutes,” she said.
“We need to wait for the others,” Nick said, trying to stop her.
“I’m not waiting, Nick; you heard him. I’ll try to stall him until you get there, but I can’t let him hurt Drew,” she said, her eyes pleading with him.
***Drew***
Drew felt the minutes ticking by, each one bringing him closer to the edge of the blade Jordan’s father kept holding against his throat. “You thought you could beat me,” he said, then laughed. “I still haven’t decided what to do with you once I have Jordan. I think it will depend on if she really loves you; if she does, you might make a nice little pet. Something I can dangle in front of her to get her to behave until she’s married, and then I’ll kill you. That should break her wild streak.”
Drew remained silent, biting back his anger, and carefully working on the bonds that held his hands. If he could get free, he could rip off the amulet Jordan’s father had put around his neck and shift. He might not survive the fight, but then her father would have nothing to bargain with, nothing to make Jordan do his bidding.
He almost had his hand loose when he saw Jordan in her wolf form stop at the top of the hill that led into the valley. She stood panting in the moonlight, and his heart swelled with love. He’d know that she’d come, that she’d never let her father hurt him, but seeing her there told him what he’d known all along.
Jordan loved him as much as he loved her. A wave of power washed over him, and it only took a little tug to get his hands free. But he could see her father’s men closing in around Jordan, so he remained still, hoping that she wasn’t alone.
“I see you’ve learned to shift up here too,” her father said. “As soon as we get home, you’ll take the potion.”
Jordan shifted back to her human form. “I’m not going home with you, and I’m not taking your potion,” she said.
Her father laughed. “Then what are you doing here? Did you come to watch me cut your husband up into little pieces until he no longer exists?”
“You won’t get away with this,” Jordan said, then she shifted and sprang at her father.
She landed on him, knocking the breath out of him, then bared her teeth and went for his jugular. But he flung her away, slamming her into a tree and to the ground, where she lay unmoving. “Stupid bitch,” her father screamed at her. “No one attacks me and lives. I’m going to kill you myself.”
He shifted, and before Drew could move, lunged for Jordan, who was still lying on the ground, but then a gray streak came shooting out of the forest and knocked the wolf out of the air. Drew knew that it was Alex but couldn’t shift to help him until the amulet was off his neck. Pulling his hands free, he ripped it off his neck, and he watched the wolves rolling in the dirt, fangs bared.
Power surged through him and in seconds, he leaped into the fight, and not even the superior strength of a magical wolf shifter was strong enough to overpower the strength of the love he felt surging through his veins. He didn’t hesitate when he got the advantage over Jordan’s father; he went straight for the jugular, but just at the last second, he shoved Drew off him and ran off into the woods.
There was a chorus of howls around him, but he was only aware of Jordan lying on the ground a few feet from him. He shifted and went to her, lifting her silky head into his lap and whispering into her ear, “Jordan, whatever is wrong, your body can fix it.”
Her eyes opened, and she took a substantial shuddering breath, then shifted back to her human form. “I’m okay,” she said, trying to sit up. “What happened to my father?”
“He ran off right before I...” Drew couldn’t finish.
Jordan reached up and stroked his cheek. “I would have done it if I’d had the chance. He almost took you from me, and I don’t think I can live without you. I love you, Drew. I should have told you sooner, but I was scared.”
“I love you too, Jordan. You may be a spoiled little rich girl, but you’re my spoiled little rich girl,” he said. “I have something for you, something that’s been missing.”
When he pulled the ring out of his pocket, Jordan gasped, and tears appeared in her eyes. “Oh, Drew, it’s perfect,” she said, holding out her hand so he could slip the ring on her finger.
“Just like you, Jordan,” he said, lowering his mouth to hers but not kissing her. “I guess Serendipity is a pretty good matchmaker. It turned the world’s most confirmed bachelor into a crazy romantic, so in love, he can’t see straight.”
“I love you too, Drew, and I promise not to tell our children what a playboy you used to be,” she said, pulling his head down and kissing him.
Alex watched with a satisfied smile on his face.
