She nodded. “He is, Dad. He’s the best.” She paused, then added, “And I want to thank you for marrying Taye. She was there for both of us when we needed her most.”
Michael Bennett gave his daughter another smile. “Taye and I will always be here for you.”
A short while later, after her father had gone, Kennedy looked out the window toward the sky. She was happy today, and she knew somewhere up there her mother was smiling.
VICTORIA
“I guess you’ve probably heard that I’m getting a divorce.”
Victoria glanced over at her father. She shouldn’t be surprised that on her wedding day, he would tell her about his plans to separate from his fourth wife. She also wouldn’t bat an eye if he told her when she returned from her honeymoon that he was marrying his fifth. “No, I hadn’t heard, but thanks for telling me, Dad.”
She knew he had more to say, and was surprised when he’d come into the dressing room, asking for a few moments alone with her. Her fifty-year-old father still looked good. He was a very handsome man. Too handsome. That had pretty much been his downfall. That, and his inability to remain faithful to any one woman.
“Cortez better treat you right.”
She lifted a brow. “In other words, he shouldn’t mess around on me like you did to Mom and your other wives?”
She guessed that maybe she should not have said that to him today of all days, but it was too late. The last thing she wanted was to cause hard feelings between them today. But then, maybe it was time that he knew about the things she’d held in for so long.
“Dad, did you know that it was because of you and Grampa’s reputations with women that I grew up believing I could never trust a man. I was afraid. I thought all men were like you two. I know differently now and appreciate Cortez showing me the difference.”
Victor Bennett, Jr. slowly shook his head. “I’m sorry you believed that, Victoria. I never knew that. But I honestly believe Cortez loves you. It’s there, for everyone to see. And I know you love him.”
He paused a moment, then said in what almost sounded to Victoria like a defeated voice, “There is no excuse for what I did to Fayrene. It was unforgivable, and Fayrene didn’t deserve that. Your mother is a good woman and the best wife any man could have asked for. I screwed up big time. Losing her will always be my biggest regret in life.”
He paused again, then said, “And whether you know it or not, you have been my biggest joy. I am so proud of you and all you’ve accomplished in life. Thanks to you, I could retire and take life a little easier. Dad and I knew we were doing the right thing when we turned the company over to you.”
“Thanks, Dad. So, tell me. Is there a wife number five lurking around somewhere that I need to know about?”
He shook his head, grinning. “Nope. I don’t plan to ever marry again. I’m done.”
Victoria doubted that, but if he wanted to believe it, then she would let him. “I need a hug, Daddy.”
Victoria walked into her father’s arms, getting the closure she needed before marrying the man who was the best thing to ever come into her life.
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL June day and the church was packed for the first-ever Bennett double wedding. The wedding planner had breathed a sigh of relief when she’d discovered that Ephesians Baptist Church could accommodate all four-hundred guests.
Everyone stood to their feet when the brides were escorted down the aisle by their fathers. Kennedy and Victoria looked absolutely breathtaking. Each bride wore a gorgeous white wedding gown, individually designed and styled to their personal specifications. And the smiles on their faces proclaimed their happiness.
Their cousins Cody, Lauren, Sebrina, and Monica were their bridesmaids. Taye was Kennedy’s matron of honor, and Fayrene was Victoria’s. Haddison’s Uncle Maceo stood as his best man with his friends, Bracen Ramone Gaskins and Dwight Harris, as his groomsmen. Cortez’s father was his best man, and his brothers Cobra and Colton were his groomsmen.
The wedding colors were blue and yellow, and the church was decorated with flowers of the same colors. Part of the wedding ceremony included the lighting of candles in memory of loved ones that the couples wanted to remember today.
Victoria lit candles for her great-grandparents, Poppa Ethan and Great-Gramma Idella. And Kennedy lit them for her mother Lynda and her great-grandfather, Papa Henry. Haddison and Kennedy also lit candles in memory of his deceased parents.
“Gentlemen, you may kiss your brides.”
As the attendees looked on, both grooms smiled as they turned to their wives and captured their mouths in rather exuberant kisses. Afterwards, the pastor proudly exclaimed, “I present Haddison and Kennedy Wolf and Cortez and Victoria Masters.”
More cheers went up as both men swept their brides off their feet to carry them out of the church.
