Chapter 3
While Adam was still hospitalized, Kyle became obsessed with the events of Brian Kinkaid’s life and death. He couldn’t get enough of it and was unsure why he had such a crazed fascination with this killer. Could it be the way both his mother and the officer reacted when Brian Kinkaid’s name was mentioned? Nevertheless, he scoured the Internet searching for anything about the serial killer, focusing mainly on his crimes and punishment. If his mother ever discovered what he was doing, she’d surely lock up his computer, but fortunately for him, she was not that adept with computers, and he knew of ways to conceal his findings from her.
The information he discovered about the atrocities Brian Kinkaid performed on the victims was terrifying and barbaric. All were random people that happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. There was no pattern, no notes left behind, and no particular type of individual he attacked. They spanned age, race, and religion. Even the time of day was inconsistent. While attacking his last victim, a woman happened to spot him and phoned the police. Her description of Brian allowed him to be caught.
Brian Kinkaid’s trial was just as frenzied as his murders, with guards posted to his immediate left and right as he sat in the courtroom with arms and legs shackled. He threatened everyone with untamed outbursts, including the judge. He spat at prosecutors and cursed witnesses. He was hauled from the courtroom on numerous occasions, causing havoc on the way out each time. After the jury found him guilty, he vowed to kill each juror in addition to the judge and prosecutors. Even the officers transporting him between the courtroom and his cell didn’t escape his wrath. He was going to kill everyone.
On the day of his execution, a muzzle was placed over his mouth, like Hannibal Lecter. He was fitted in a straitjacket and carted to the execution room. The guards lifted his body onto the gurney and strapped him down with thick leather straps, then loosened the harness securing his left arm. Immediately, he began flailing it around, trying to grab onto anything and anyone, but was quickly overpowered. They slammed his arm onto the protruding arm of the gurney and strapped it down tightly. He was ready to receive his drug cocktail. His muted tirade through his muzzle meant business. As he lay on his back, he sneered and cursed at the witnesses, again vowing to return. Nothing was easy. When it was time, the doctor administered the drugs into his bloodstream. He fought even harder, squirming and cussing. News reports stated witnesses found his death terrifying, with a few becoming afraid he wasn’t going to die. However, the drugs cast their final deadly spell, and he slumped back down, never to breathe again.
