I stood there frozen in my spot as I parsed the cold calculation of a man that traded one of his soldiers against one untried Relic Keeper. Both of us, Reagan and I, were nothing but chess pieces for games that Kieron played with all our lives. There was no room in his mathematics for compassion or sympathizing with the suffering pieces in play on the board.
“You’re a bastard,” I spit. “You are all bastards.”
Not a single man disagreed. Luca, Marcus, and Dominic continued to look at the floor. Roman studied me with a feral intensity that would have made me shiver if I wasn’t burning with anger.
And Kieron? His face was a stony mask that revealed nothing.
I made a noise of disgust, threw up my hands, and then stormed out of the library in a righteous rage. But where was I to go? I was stuck here on Kieron’s estate, ringed with his private army and fenced from the casual intruders. Not deterred, I stomped to the sitting room across the hall from Kieron’s library office and opened the double door that led out to the garden.
I walked past hedges, berms, and flower beds, and barely caused a ripple in my passing. It enraged me that Kieron would do nothing to help Reagan. Intellectually I get that he’s only doing what he thought was best, but I didn’t agree with it one bit. Fuck this, “she’s a soldier” crap. She deserved more than Kieron leaving her behind enemy lines. I couldn’t fathom his attitude and the acquiescence of his elite Triae. It boggled my mind.
God I hope she’s alive.
Storming about had little effect without an audience, and my rage simmered as I came to the large water fountain in the garden. I hated how little answers I had. It seemed the more I learned, the less I knew. Who was the man in the hood who’d saved me before? How come he didn’t show up when I needed him most? It definitely wasn’t Terrak. And how had Yasinda found me? What if Reagan didn’t survive?
What if—stop, Abby.
Kieron, as quiet as death, slid up to next me. We watched the fountain for a long time. I had nothing else to say to him.
He sighed, and it was long and heavy as if it came from the weight on his shoulders.
“You must stop thinking the world revolves around you, Ms. Davenport, or that you can do anything that will affect anything. All these events now have their roots hundreds of years before you were born. You have nothing to do with any of it until the final hours the prophecy gives as your part. That is when we need you, so until then we will do anything to protect you. We have to. The fate of two worlds rests on you being there at the proper time.”
I shook my head stubbornly.
“If you won’t do what I ask, then I’ll find someone who will. No more blood on my hands.”
Kieron watched me with unreadable eyes. “If you persist, we will save you from yourself.”
“Is that a promise?”
“No,” he said darkly. “It’s a threat.” Kieron turned and walked toward the house, but I did not doubt he had his guards hidden in the shadows to make sure I didn’t do something stupid.
As if that would stop me.
I was a prisoner again, only this time in a silk-lined cage.
For everyone Yasinda hurt, for everything she took from me, I didn’t want to just defeat her . . . I wanted to destroy her until there was nothing left. I didn’t just want her ended. I wanted her obliterated.
And for that, I needed my magic and the Relic. It had already called for me once, I could find it again.
Granthom, the Dark Fae ally of Rugus had claimed, “There are always way to grow stronger”
Fine. I’ll find out what those ways were.
I’ll got to the Dark Fae City, and after that, I would find Reagan, find the Relic, and destroy anyone who got it my way.
