If You Ever Change Your Mind Page 13

by B. Love

Lucas was continuing to dominate the natural haircare field. Although he wanted to add more beauty supply stores to his chain, he decided to focus on expanding his line over the next few years because that was the best way to double his income and not be required to be as hands on. With Luca going through his terrible two stage and Hali wobbling around with their first child together, Lucas needed all the free time to devote to his family that he could get.

It was hard for Hali to juggle making book covers, paintings, sculptures, and illustrations for the show on top of being a wife and mother who took care of herself, so she chose to focus on the things that gave her the most joy – her family, of course, and creating comic book and graphic novel designs. Although Lucas brought in more than enough money to see to her every need and desire, Hali continued to design just because it was her passion, and when she had the time or a special request, she painted or sculpted.

Exactly one year ago today, Hali did herself the biggest favor she ever could – she was honest with herself about what she wanted. Love. Marriage. Family. She released the convenience of her Mr. Right Now to make room for her Mr. Right Along, and as she sat on the edge of the bed and prepared to have her birthday breakfast with Lucas and Luca, Hali had never been happier in her entire life.

The sound of little feet running down the hall had Hali quickening her movements. She pulled her hair up into a ball just to get it out of the way for the time being, then covered the top of her body with her spaghetti strapped shirt. Luca ran into the room she shared with Lucas and found his usual place in her arms for a hug.

“Hey, cutie pie,” she greeted, kissing the top of his head.

“Happy birthday, mommy,” he sang, looking up at her with eyes just as beautiful as his fathers.

Hali smiled, heart warming and swelling with love.

“Thank you, baby,” Luca placed his hand on her protruding belly, “Who’s in there?” she asked with a smile.

“My baby sister!” Luca boasted proudly before kissing her stomach as he’d watched Lucas do a million times.

“Awww. Aren’t you a loving big brother just like your daddy? Where is he?”

“In the kitchen,” Luca answered, running out of the room with Hali following behind.

Because of the scents that permeated the air, Hali expected breakfast, but what she didn’t expect was the balloons, flowers and gifts that accompanied it on the table. Feeling her emotions start to run rampant, Hali palmed her face and tried to steady them quickly. The feel of Lucas wrapping his arms around her hurried the process along.

  “Happy birthday, angel.”

“Thank you, baby. You didn’t have to go through all of this trouble for me.”

“This was no trouble at all. I know you said you wanted to open your presents tonight after dinner, but there’s one that I really want you to open right now.”

Lucas took her hand into his and led her over to the table. Hali sat down in front of the plate that Lucas had already made for her and smiled as he handed her the manila folder. For someone who didn’t enjoy cooking, he sure was doing a lot of it lately.

“What’s this?” she asked before he pecked her lips.

“Open it and see,” he tossed back with a smile.

Hali inhaled deeply and swayed from side to side excitedly in her seat. No one had ever given her a birthday present that came in a folder before, but when had Lucas done anything the conventional way? Hali opened the folder slowly, and as she read over the birth certificate her smile fell. Her tear-filled eyes scanned the document… stopping at the name listed for Luca’s mother – Hali Davison Berry.

“It’s official,” Lucas declared, “All of the necessary paperwork has been filed. You are legally Luca’s mother. Happy birthday, Hali.”

She didn’t think this day could get any better, but as she stood and walked over to her husband and her son, Hali had never been happier to be wrong.

  THE END
