Prologue
HeVan…
Grace Perez Rephaim strode down the corridor in the palace, Joan Whist Arzel by her side. They were on their way to the queen’s chamber. Addie still wouldn’t spend very much time there because she had the feeling she was being watched. They’d gotten Jalen to come in and scan all the rooms. Grace was shocked at the number of recording devices they’d uncovered. Jalen explained that someone wanted to know everything the queen did, and it was long suspected the secret path of the Nam-Nin originated in the queen’s chambers.
Addie remembered the words Tamiel had spoken to her. She needed to complete her bond with HeVan. She also needed to make sure she kept the secrets of her ancestors. Therefore, she was not willing to proceed as long as she felt as if she were being watched whenever she went into the room.
Grace had recruited Joan. Like all the Nephilim descendants, Joan had a psychic gift. Hers was an affinity for mechanisms of any kind. She could feel their presence and manipulate them with her mind. She could feel anything from a wristwatch, a ceiling fixture, an automobile, or even a computer.
They were all hoping Joan could put Addie’s worries to rest. Certain factions in the senate were whispering that until Addie joined with the planet, she wasn’t truly the Nam-Nin. It seemed to be a small group, but Addie and Grace didn’t want to give them any ammunition with which to gain followers. Addie needed to cement her position as Nam-Nin as soon as possible. The Nephilim needed to heal from thousands of years without their supreme queen.
To make matters worse, Grace was investigating a rape and a case of attempted murder. Both crimes were the first committed in over a thousand years, if not much longer. Part of her was ecstatic about putting her skills to work, and another part was depressed they were needed. There was almost no crime on HeVan, at least not until recently. There wasn’t an effective police force. She would have to make changes. She knew for every reported crime, there were likely more that had not been reported. She could see a lot of traveling in her future.
She would have relished traveling and investigating a year ago. Now she was the mother of three precocious baby girls; things had changed. Her musings were interrupted when she saw they had arrived at their destination.
“You ready to do your thing?” Grace asked.
“Sure, it’ll be a snap,” Joan answered, following Grace into the room. Addie and her Ankida were already there. All the furniture in the room had been cleared out. Addie was angry the beautiful pieces had been left to rot and hadn’t even had dust covers thrown over them. She had sent them out to be restored. She wanted the room to look as it had when Ishnam had lived here with her Ankida.
“So, what exactly am I looking for?” Joan asked Addie.
“I need to make sure when we come into this room, we have privacy. I still feel as if I’m being watched whenever I’m in here,” she said.
“Your own powers haven’t discovered anything?”
“I’m not at full power yet. My finding power knows something is here, but I’m having trouble narrowing it down further,” Addie said in a frustrated voice.
Joan understood. She jacked up her own senses and sent them around the room.
Grace, Addie, and the others tried to be as quiet as possible. They didn’t want to disturb Joan as she did her thing. Only about a third of the women from Earth had left to live in other parts of HeVan with thei
r Ankida. The rest had put their faith and futures in Addie’s hands. The events, which had occurred during their voyage to HeVan, had made them cautious. They loved their Ankida and were anxious to start their new lives. At the same time, they were still new to the alien planet that had become their new home. The changes coming one upon the other were scary. They thought they would be hailed as the mothers of a new generation and found many Nephilim were unfriendly and jealous. The result was they clung to Addie and put off moving to their ancestral lands or the homes of their Ankida. The palace of the queens of HeVan had stood nearly empty for ten thousand years; now it was suddenly full to bursting with life and laughter.
In Addie’s mind, things would start to settle down once she was able to fulfill her destiny by joining with the planet. She just wanted to make sure the secrets of her ancestors were kept. Additionally, she really didn’t want strangers watching her have sex with her guys either!
A couple of the lights in the room went dark. Arjun moved forward, putting an arm around Addie, making sure she was protected. The plaster on the walls and ceiling began to crack, pieces started falling. Arjun picked up Addie and rushed her from the room. Kylan did the same for Grace, as Rune picked up Joan. Once they were in the corridor, they looked back into the room.
The plaster continued to fall in larger and larger pieces. With a whoosh, the rest came down and plaster dust billowed out into the hallway. Coughing, the six of them moved farther away from the dust.
“What the hell just happened?” Grace asked.
“Sorry, this is my fault. I could feel the presence of many hidden things. I pushed my power to the max. I thought it would help me pinpoint the hiding places. Instead, I made it so all the cameras were revealed. I guess we’ll see what’s what when the dust settles,” Joan explained.
Rune went through a different room to work his way around to the private gardens. He planned to open the terrace doors to help disperse the dust cloud.
The door to the bedroom was closed against the dust so the three women stood around, chatting about the changes in their lives. It was a favorite topic amongst the women from Earth. New love, new planet, new culture, and new lives meant there was always something to share. While the women talked, Arjun went to get everyone some water. All their throats were slightly irritated from the plaster dust. Kylan moved down the hallway in a position to protect the women. Even though they were in the private royal wing, he would take no chances.
“So, my Ankida and I decided to go to their House instead of my own. I want to live where there are familiar faces. Not to me, but to my Ankida. I think their family will welcome us more than anyone from my own House,” said Joan.
Little by little, one at a time, the women were growing comfortable enough to leave the palace. It looked as if Joan were getting to that point soon.
When Arjun returned, they were all grateful for a drink. After standing in the hall for a few minutes, they were able to approach the door to the queen’s chamber without choking. Three of Addie’s daughters transported into the hallway before they turned to walk back to the doorway. They floated in mid-air just in front of them.
“Oh, my!” said Joan, as Arjun, Addie, and Kylan reached forward to take the babies into their arms. At first, all three had been glowing, but now only one was. Addie knew right away it was Cara, her third daughter. The others were Aelwen and Bedelia. All of them felt their lungs clear and were no longer struggling not to cough. Joan’s hands went to her waist; her pants had started to slip down over her hips.
“Oh, my gosh! I know you told me they could heal, but this is amazing! All my belly rolls are gone. I didn’t think I’d ever get my pre-twin body back,” Joan exclaimed. “I’m going to have to hold on to my pants if I don’t want to embarrass myself. Either that or find a piece of rope I can use as a belt.”
“It’s a specialty of theirs, healing mothers after they’ve given birth. They healed Addie first. Even though she told them not to do it anymore, we weren’t actually hurt, and they keep doing it. I wonder how they knew we were coughing from the dust?” Grace asked the group.
“I’m sure they share a link with their mother. This ability to float and transport them from one place to another is worrying, though,” Arjun added.
The notifyer Grace wore on her belt chimed. When she tapped her earbud to answer the call, she listened to the frantic guard explained three of the royal babies had disappeared from the nursery. She told him she had the situation under control and disconnected. She wasn’t ready to explain to the guards about the increasing abilities of the infants.
“The entire palace has just gone into lockdown. The warriors on duty outside the nursery just informed me three of the princesses were missing. We need to get them back and calm things down. I also need to speak with the warriors. The girls were gone for at least three minutes before the alarm was made. That’s too slow of a response time,” Grace stated.
She took her job as arbiter seriously. The welfare of all the women and children was a top priority. The security of the palace fell under her purview.
“We’ll take the babies back to the nursery while you deal with whatever Joan uncovered,” said Addie, reaching to take Aelwen from Arjun in the crook of her left arm. She already held Cara in her right. Grace took Bedelia from Kylan, and the two of them went around a corner and headed to the nursery.
“It looks like we can add teleportation and telekinesis to our children’s gifts,” said Arjun, as he watched Addie walk away.
“I wonder what surprises Erena and Fenella have in store for us?” asked Kylan, as they turned to walk back to the queen’s chamber. A still awed Joan followed behind, holding up her pants.
Joan wasn’t surprised at what they found when they looked into the room, though the men obviously were. Underneath the layer of plaster was a filament net and thousands of pinhole cameras.
“Someone went to a great deal of trouble putting this in place, and then recreating the original plasterwork over it, thinly enough so the camera lenses wouldn’t be obscured,” she explained.
Kylan whistled when he saw it. “When we take it down, I’ll have Jalen go over all the components. I’d like to see what we can find out from them.”
Arjun nodded. He saw Rune opening the terrace doors at the far side of the room. He also looked struck by what he was seeing. “I’m going to go through the records of our House. I want to see if I can find out when this was done. Knowing the age of the components will help.”
“I wonder if there’s a way of tracing the signal. If someone is watching now, they have to know their game is up,” Kylan said, and Arjun agreed.
“Well, I’m going to take off now. There isn’t anything else here. I didn’t shut down the cameras, but I did fool them a little. You have about a day before they figure out what happened,” interjected Joan. “Don’t ask me how I did it. I don’t think I could explain it if I tried,” she said, seeing the question in their eyes.
All the Nephilim descendants from Earth had gifts. The women couldn’t explain how the gifts worked or why there was such a wide variety. They had thought it was because they were Nephilim, but soon learned only the Nephilim of Earth and the Nam-Nin had any powers at all.
After being thanked by the men, Joan left to return to her own Ankida and her twin girls. She was looking forward to showing off her completely healed body. After the twins went down for their nap, she was going to convince her Ankida they needed to spend some time in bed too.

Earth…
FBI Special Agent Josephine March, whom her friends and family called Jo, strode down the long hallway of the Federal Building, removing her earmuffs and gloves along the way. She’d put in a transfer to the Chicago office a year ago, even though she’d never been to Chicago and wasn’t overly fond of the cold weather in this part of the country. She had dreamed of Chicago and felt compelled to go there. After a while, she stopped fighting the compulsion and made the request. Her record was exem
plary and the request was granted. So here she was, in cold, snowy Chicago, in the middle of the month she was named. She hoped March would be the last of winter, and April would be warmer.
She answered the summons to come into work even though she was officially on leave. Instead of being allowed to burrow into her apartment during this latest snowstorm, she ended up driving carefully over the city streets. The plows were out in force to keep up with the falling snow. It reminded her of the reason for her leave. Due to an incident with an icy road, she had a swollen face and a couple of cracked ribs. By the time she parked in the garage at the Federal Building, she was even more curious as to why she was here.
Grateful she hadn’t had to park on the street and slog her way into the building, she took the elevator to the tenth floor. After dumping all her outer gear, parka, and snow boots at her desk, she slipped on a pair of athletic shoes and checked her appearance in a small mirror. Since there wasn’t anything she could do about her looks, she put away the mirror and got up. She knocked on the door belonging to her direct supervisor’s office and went in at his call to enter.
“Good, you’re here,” said Michael McLuckie, the Special Agent in Charge, or SAC, of her division. “Take a seat; I have an undercover assignment for you.”
He waited for her to sit down in one of the two visitor chairs in front of his desk. He took a moment to look her over carefully. There were still some visible bruises. Even though she tried to hide it, he could tell she was still hurting.
