Finally, we see an alternate history in which Gerald Ford recovers from his bizarre foreign policy gaffe in his second debate with Jimmy Carter. Carter wins the popular vote but due to the peculiarities of the Electoral College system, Ford is elected to a full term.
Both books – Then Everything Changed and If Kennedy Lived – are painstakingly researched. Each volume ends with a sizable set of author’s notes, justifying the speeches, conversations, and documents cited. Greenfield makes a few errors, but each of them stands out like a throbbing thumb. For instance, at one point he has a Presidential term ending in 1968. It’s middle school civics that Presidential elections take place in November of years divisible by four, but the outgoing President’s term lasts until the following January 20th. How could Greenfield not know this?
And at another point, Greenfield mentions that Dwight Eisenhower was John Kennedy’s commanding officer in the Second World War. But Eisenhower was in the Army, and spent the war commanding allied forces in the ETO – the European Theater of Operations. Kennedy was in the Navy, and served in the Pacific.
Are there no fact checkers at G.P. Putnam’s Sons?
Here’s a critic’s theory. Then Everything Changed is the book that Greenfield wanted to write. He put his heart and soul into it. That shows, and the book is remarkably strong. Once it was completed, his editor (or agent) said something like this:
‘‘Jeff, you know the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy is coming up. I’ve read Then Everything Changed. It’s a fine book. It’s going to be a big success. I hope you can do it again. Can you write a book about Kennedy’s surviving Dallas and going on to a second term? How about it, Jeff?’’
And Greenfield replied, ‘‘I don’t know. I’ve put everything I’ve got into Then Everything Changed. I don’t know if I can do it again. I don’t know if I want to do it again.’’
At which point Greenfield’s editor (or agent) picked up a pencil and a piece of paper, wrote down a number, turned the paper around and slid it across his desk to Greenfield.
The writer’s eyes opened wide. He swallowed and said, ‘‘I guess I can do it again. Yes, I think I’ll write it. I’ll call it something like, If Kennedy Lived.’’
This reviewer could be wrong, but he doesn’t think he is.
