He was saying everything I wanted him to say. Everything. But something hadn’t change. It wouldn’t change.
I leaned in and kissed him, just a brush of our mouths because I needed to feel him again. And I know he tasted the regret on my lips because his eyes blurred with doubt. “Adam, I have to focus on Gideon. He has to be my number one priority now.”
Adam chuckled, biting his lower lip as he dragged his fingers through my hair, smoothing it off my face. “That’s why I’m so fucking crazy about you. The way you love Gideon . . . it shows me your capacity to love . . . I want that . . . I want the chance to make you love me that much.” He traced his fingers over my cheek and I leaned into it, craving his touch. “But I’m not interested in getting in between you and your son. You’ve already lost so much time. I just want the chance to be part of your life and when you think it’s right and when I’ve earned that honor . . . I want to be part of Gideon’s life too.”
He pulled me towards him and kissed me again, deep and tender. I felt the electricity of it everywhere, so I groaned when he pulled away and took his warmth with him. I ached with wanting it, needing him.
I was done denying how much I wanted him in my life. I wanted the chance he talked about; a chance to find out what we could be to each other. Hadn’t I told myself each day behind bars that I wouldn’t waste this when I was on the outside? That I wouldn’t waste the precious gifts of grace when they showed up in my life? I had and now it was time to live the life I’d dreamed about.
I slipped my hand around the back of his neck, holding him close. I let my smile take over my face, allowing my happiness to show. It felt good to be happy, it felt good to see a future with Adam in it. “You forgot Fat Dave. You’ve got to take Fat Dave too. This family is a package deal.”
Adam grinned as he stepped back, creating enough space between us for him to fish something out of his pocket. It was a small packet of pills and he waved them in the air.
“My doctor prescribed allergy pills. Fat Dave can abuse me all he wants.”
Now it was my turn to smile, pressing one last kiss to his lips before I yelled towards the house. “Grab that extra fishing rod, Gideon. Adam is coming with us.”
