“I would love to, Kyle. I just don’t know how much travel is in the budget as school just started.”
“I get that. Saturday we have a show in Eugene and Sunday in Portland. That’s not too far.”
“Not too, but it is quite a drive.”
“We don’t leave until Friday night, and I thought, well, maybe you could come with me and the guys and I could get you a bus back home Monday, since it’s Labor Day.”
Josie was smiling and Kyle started to look concerned.
“That’s too much to ask, isn’t it? I’m sorry, I just-“
“Kyle,” she interrupted. “I would love to join you.”
“Seriously?”
He was smiling so big. She didn’t realize how badly he’d wanted her to come. It was adorable.
“Josie, it’ll be so great to have you there. It can get so lonely on the road. The guys are great, but after being in a van with them for weeks and the whole touring thing, well. It gets old after a while. The shows are great, but the touring, not so much.”
“Where would we stay?” she asked with a smile.
“Ben has a sister near Eugene. She’s got a huge place out in the country, and she’s putting us up the first night. In Portland we’re staying in a motel, nothing fancy, but I’ll get us our own room. Are you sure? I know it’s a lot to ask.” He was rambling, but trying so hard to convince her it would be fun.
She slid into the booth next to him, grabbed his shoulders and said, “Shut up. I want to be with you, even in a van on the way to Oregon filled with belching rockers. I just want you.”
Kyle took her face into his hands and kissed her. She could taste chocolate on his lips and she fell into his arms again, the easiest place to be.
