“Yes?” Gregory said. “No, I’m fine. I’m safe. I wasn’t in the building when it happened. Must have left right before that. Is the rest of the staff okay? Alright, I’ll be right there.”
Gregory hung up the phone and then looked at Hayley. She reached back to the counter top and found her bra and shirt. She put them back on while intermittently kissing Gregory.
“I’m so sorry,” Gregory said. “I have to go…”
“It’s okay,” Hayley nodded. “I understand.”
Hayley looked at Gregory with a new perspective. She thought of the interviews he gave, the false persona that he assumed, the fact that the man acted like he didn’t give a damn about anyone except himself…when in turn, the real truth was hiding behind a mask that she only knew about.
“Can I trust you to keep this between us?” Gregory asked, picking his hero suit from the floor.
“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me,” she told him.
Hayley smiled. She saw the smallest twinkle of a smile on Gregory’s face, and at that moment, she knew she had left an impression on him. Her! Plain, unremarkable Haley had just solidified the interest of the most interesting billionaire on the planet.
Gregory led Hayley back to the entrance of the panic room. He pressed a button and the door slid open. Hayley kissed Gregory on the cheek and walked out of the room. She made her way to the elevator, practically reeling from the fact that all of this was happening.
Hayley knew the real truth, the truth that nobody else seemed to know about Gregory Kincaid. She wished she could tell others, but she reminded herself that too much was at risk for her to expose Gregory’s alter ego. As she walked through the building, past police officers and crime scene investigators, Hayley resolved that she would still write an article, but she would focus on the version of Gregory that people already knew, and also share her experience being a part of a terrorist attack.
In her mind, her experience that day was the start of something bigger than a silly magazine article. This was the potential beginning of a relationship with a man who could show her a world she’d never known about. He could give her pleasure beyond her wildest dreams, and add mystery and adventure to her life. She hoped that maybe, just maybe he would open up to her again soon, and maybe in the next “interview” that he would allow her to continue to become intimate with the real Gregory. She sensed their chemistry, and she couldn’t deny how electric their lovemaking had been. But for now, she would just smile as she walked out of the building, pretending to have been an innocent bystander in the attack and hiding her new secret from the world.
