As soon as I step outside the truck, the wind is so biting it drives me inside Cam’s house in a hurry. He takes my coat, and as he hangs it up in the front closet, I look around with interest. Cam’s house is cute. The kitchen’s off to the left and the living room is directly in front of us.
“This is very homey. I love it.”
“Thanks. It’s a pretty quick look—kitchen, living room—” He points. “I’ll show you the upstairs, and then we’ll eat.”
I stare at his ass as he leads me up the stairs. His jeans fit him just right, and when he turns to help me up the last step, I fist my hands to stop from touching his chest. The fabric of his shirt clings to his muscles perfectly.
Cam’s bedroom is simply decorated with a king-sized bed draped in a royal blue comforter and backed by a dark wooden headboard with a painting hanging above it. In the corner stands a tall wooden dresser.
“Is that Montana?” I point to the painting of a gorgeous sunset over snow-capped mountains.
He nods. “I bought that painting when I was last out there.”
“It’s beautiful.”
Cam leads me downstairs and into the kitchen. “Everything’s about ready. It’s been warming while I left to pick you up.”
I stand in the middle of the kitchen, unsure of what to do.
“Can you take the salads, hon?” Cam hands me two bowls filled with mixed greens and tomato slices.
“Sure.”
Smiling at his sweet term of endearment, I walk over to the rectangular dining table and put down the two bowls. An unopened bottle of wine sits on the table.
“You ready?” Cam has two wine glasses in one hand and a corkscrew in the other.
I sit down and wait politely while Cam struggles with the wine bottle.
“I can never get these things,” he mutters as he tries to get the corkscrew into the cork.
“Need a hand?”
“You good at this?”
“Sure.”
“I’ll have to have you over every time I want a glass of wine,” he jokes.
I finish the last bite of one of the best homemade dinners I’ve ever had. Cam went all out with chicken dumplings, baked sweet potatoes, and corn bread.
But once dinner’s over, my nerves start. I’m going to have sex tonight. Finally.
Cam looks at me, and it’s like he senses my anxiety. “I’m going to need to shovel after this snowfall,” he says casually as he glances out the window.
I crane my neck but I’m too far away from the window to see much in the dark.
“Is it snowing a lot?” I ask.
“Enough. You want to shovel together?”
“You don’t use a snowplow service?”
Mama couldn’t survive without one.
“Nope. I do my own shoveling.” He takes my hand. “Come out with me. It’ll be fun. It’s a full moon tonight. Plus, I want to show you something.”
I pull on my coat and hat and follow him out the front door reluctantly. I like the snow, but I don’t really understand why we would shovel when it’s still actually snowing. It seems like that would defeat the purpose.
But Cam is naturally more optimistic than I am. He leads the way to his garage happily, not seeming to realize his shoveling efforts may not make much sense to the average person.
And when he opens the door to his garage, I gasp. “Wow!”
The space is filled with the most beautiful wood furniture I’ve ever seen.
He smiles at my expression. “Take a look around if you want.”
Stunned by the detail of the different pieces, I wander around the room. From a ranch-style bed frame to an intricately-designed dresser, everything is meticulously made.
“How do you find the time to do all this?”
“I love it,” he says. “So I make the time. My sales job is flexible, and it’s given me great contacts and resources. I’ll take calls in my garage and then go right back to work. If I’m not playing hockey, I’m doing this.”
“Cam, this is incredible.” I put my arms around him. “I know it will be a success. It looks like it already is.”
“It’s been a great side job for a while now,” he agrees. “But I’m getting ready to go all in with it. That’s been the scary part.” He scans his garage. “I’ve got two shovels somewhere, but one’s a mini.”
He pulls them out to show me, and I start laughing.
“Two-for-one special—five bucks,” he explains as I grab the smaller shovel. “We can switch if you want.”
I shake my head. “That’s okay. I’ll do the walkway while you shovel the drive.”
The moon is so bright I can see clearly. Cam lives at the end of a dead-end street, so it’s very quiet. Nobody’s out and no cars, either. It’s a beautiful night.
By the time we finish, the snow has stopped.
“Looks like it was the perfect time to shovel,” he says.
“I think you should be a fortune-teller in another life,” I tease him. “You’re probably the only person in town who sensed just when the snowfall was going to stop.”
We go back inside, and Cam hangs my coat up next to his.
We settle on his living room couch, neither of us speaking. It’s so quiet that all I can hear is the clock ticking on the wall.
I drag my teeth over my bottom lip and swivel to face him. Cam sucks in a breath as we study each other.
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” I whisper to him.
“I can help you with that,” he says as he moves closer to me.
“Oh, really?” My voice comes out husky.
“Oh, definitely.” He kisses my neck, and then his hands are underneath my top.
He kisses my mouth, slowly and methodically, as he unhooks my bra. Cam takes his time as he helps me pull off my top, and then his lips close over my nipple.
“Savannah,” he says into my skin. “Unbutton your jeans.”
I do what he says, but when he pulls back to drag my pants down my legs, I bite my lip.
“We can stop.” His hands freeze. “Let me know what you want, Savannah.”
“I…” I clear my throat. “I want to…keep going.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
My face is flaming hot by the time my pants hit the ground. But when my underwear lands on top of my pants, I don’t know what to do next.
I go to cover myself. But Cam catches me by the hip. “Savannah.” His eyes are filled with longing, and I lose some of my self-consciousness.
“You’re gorgeous.” Cam’s voice is soft and sweet. “I just need to…”
His mouth is between my thighs before I can shriek. My immediate squeals just make him chuckle into my sensitive skin, and I reach for his hair to try to pull him away.
But then he does this thing with his tongue, and holy heck, my head drops back against the couch cushion.
“Cam. Oh, God.” I grip his hair harder than I plan to. “Oh, I’m sorry.”
“Please don’t say sorry again. And keep pulling on my hair, babe.”
He licks and kisses me until I’m calling out his name, and my body is rocked by the biggest orgasm of my life. He murmurs sweet compliments into my skin as he kisses his way back up my body, his mouth landing on mine. When his hardness presses between my legs, I want him more than ever.
Cam stands to take off his jeans and boxer briefs, and I keep my eyes fixed to the side, refusing to look at him.
“Savannah.” I can hear the amusement in his voice. “Look at me, honey.”
I turn my head toward him.
Holy moly. I didn’t know a man’s package could be so…sizable.
I stare between Cam’s legs and then up at his face.
He breaks into a chuckle. “You look horrified.”
“I’m not,” I say quickly. “I’m…surprised. You were right—I really had no idea what I was in for. Even though I touched you last night, seeing makes it more real.”
He reaches for my h
and and wraps my fingers around his cock. “You call the shots, Savannah. Okay? We’ll go as slowly as you want to. It will be good for you. I promise.”
I raise my eyes to his. Like he knows what I’m thinking, he reaches down and pulls a foil packet out of his jeans pocket. He tears open the packet and takes out a condom. He rolls it on carefully and then leans me back against the end of the couch so he can kneel between my legs.
He positions himself at my entrance, but instead of moving like I expect him to, he cups my cheek with his hand. “We’ll go so slowly you’ll be begging me to speed up.” His dimple flashes, and he leans closer to kiss me.
As the same moment that his tongue enters my mouth, he pushes inside me a fraction of an inch.
Oh, God. Cam’s huge. I did not expect it to feel this tight, and I squirm at the sensation.
“You’re ready for me,” he promises. “I made sure of it. Just tell me if you want me to stop.”
He presses inside an inch and then back out, in another inch and then out. Before I know it, he’s completely inside me. I gasp with every move, every sensation filling me up inside. He’s filling me in a way that I didn’t know possible.
“I’m so full,” I say, and his lips are hard on mine.
He kisses me like it’s the last time he’ll ever touch me, like his very life depends on it.
“You feel fucking perfect. I love being inside you,” he says into my mouth.
“Cam. Oh, my God.” The desire rocketing through my body is overwhelming, and I clutch at his back for support.
He stays still until I’ve fully adjusted to the feeling of him inside me.
“You can move,” I say. “I’m ready.”
He starts slowly. But the friction is driving me wild, and just like he predicted, soon I’m saying, “Please go faster, Cam. I can’t take it. I need more…”
He thrusts faster and harder, and any soreness is overwhelmed by an intense need to have him deeper inside me.
But instead of tipping over the edge, I feel myself start to tense. And I don’t come. Then I start thinking about not coming, and soon Cam’s pausing.
“Savannah.” His breath brushes my cheek. “Stop thinking.”
I freeze and look into his concerned eyes. “I can’t.”
I’m so caught up in my own thoughts that it barely registers when he pulls out of me and flips me onto my stomach before entering me again from behind.
Holy shit.
“This is…” I moan into the couch. “Oh, God. It’s so good.”
Something about the angle, and the fact that he’s behind me, and the angle…
I can’t think. I can’t worry. All I can do is feel.
My orgasm explodes through me, and Cam follows with his own release. We collapse onto the couch, his arms wrapped tightly around me from behind. He makes sure to slide off of me so he doesn’t crush me, but his lips are on my neck.
“You’re beautiful.”
Two words. So simple, but they mean everything to me. Because I know Cam means them. He thinks I’m beautiful inside and out. The same way I feel about him.
Chapter Twenty-One
The entire next day, I’m walking on air. I smell Cam on my skin, I remember the way he kissed me and the way he felt inside me. Even though I’m sore, I want to be with him again as soon as possible.
Right before practice, I pick up my phone and call Celie.
“Did you sleep with him?” she squeals immediately.
“Hi.”
“Savannah, there’s no time for niceties. Did you do it or not?”
“How about a different question for starters?” Then I give up. “Yes.”
“Thank God!” she says loudly. “You finally lost your virginity! And the orgasm?”
I break into a laugh. “Fine, I’ll share. Yes. And it was amazing. I’ll be seeing him at practice in a few minutes. But, now that he’s helped me with my resolution, what if that’s it? Maybe we only dated to get me over this hump, and he’s expecting us to go back to being friends.”
“Hmmm.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Maybe I should just call him.”
“Noooo!” Celie’s voice comes blaring through the phone. “Don’t call him, Vannah! Keep him guessing.”
A knock on my door interrupts us. “Come in!”
“No!” Celie yells at me again. “Don’t just ask him to come in! I’m telling you; make him sweat it out!”
I’ve already stopped listening to her because Cam is stepping into my office, and I lose my breath looking at him. He’s wearing a deep blue sweater under his unbuttoned overcoat and black dress pants. He grins at me and walks over to my desk. “Hey.”
I’m smiling at him, about to respond, when—
“Do you hear me?” Celie shouts so loudly that Cam looks at the phone.
“Is that Celie?” he asks, his dimple showing.
“I’m telling you, Vannah, I know what I’m doing in this area!” Celie’s still yelling. “Do not allow him to…”
“Bye, Cel.” I cut her off and hang up.
I look up at Cam. “Hi.” I try to sound casual, but the word comes out all breathy. “How was your day?”
“It was great.”
Shit. I stand up.
Maybe I should sit down.
I take a seat at my desk again, but then I stand up and take a step toward Cam. Maybe I should just sit down…
“Vannah.” Cam grabs my hand to keep me from moving. “How are you?”
“Good.” I step away from him, realizing my office door is half open.
Craig’s already at the rink, so I’m the only one left in this part of the building. I shut and lock the door, and then I gesture to the couch. “You want a seat?”
Cam sits down, and I join him.
“Why do you look so nervous?” His eyes flash with vulnerability. “We had an amazing night.”
I look down at my hands. “We did. At least, I did. And I didn’t know…”
“Savannah.” Cam tips my chin up with his finger. “Last night was incredible.”
I flush with warmth. “It was.”
“And I want to keep spending time with you like that.”
“You do? So it wasn’t a one-night thing?”
“Of course not. I like you a lot. So…” Cam cups my cheek in his hand and puts his lips over mine.
He tastes so good, and butterflies take over my stomach.
“You’ve got practice,” I say into his mouth. “And I need to be there too.”
“I know.” His voice is low, and he nibbles my lower lip. “But it can wait for ten minutes. Or fifteen.”
I put my arms around him, and he lies back and brings me on top of him. I glance over to my windows, but the shades are already drawn for the night. Nobody in the world could see us.
“No one was around when I came in here,” Cam whispers in my ear like he can read my mind. “Not a soul. They’re all at the rink.”
“They are.” And I want him so much it hurts.
“You’re safe, Savannah.” Cam unhooks my bra. “We’ll be fast. Well, as fast as we can be when I want to do lots of dirty things to you.”
I pop open his jeans. “Can I suck you?”
He groans. “You’re seriously asking for my permission? You can do that whenever you want to as much as you want to.”
I lean over until I can take him into my mouth. And he feels so good; I keep going until he’s muttering curse words and begging me to suck harder. When he comes, another piece of my heart opens.
I never thought I’d like giving a blowjob, but I like everything about being with Cam. And I don’t ever want it to end.
The Cannons win their next game. One more win, and we’re in the playoffs for the first time in six years. Of course, tonight’s game holds extra meaning because it will mark the first time the Colorado Caves have come to Minnesota since my father began coaching there.
It’s only seven thirty a.m., and I’m already breaking into
a nervous sweat. I run into Molly on my way to the kitchen.
“Scared me!” I say to her.
“Sorry. What are you so jumpy about?” Before I can answer her, her eyes widen. “Oh, my God! Tonight’s the game, isn’t it?”
I nod. “Aren’t you and Celie coming?”
“Well, since he was so interested in seeing me and all…” she says in an irritated tone. “But I do feel unfinished. You know?”
“Of course, Mol. I’m not even sure what I’m going to say. I just know I have to at least see him.”
“Cel and I will meet you there. Promise.”
I hug her. “Let’s go eat breakfast.”
Molly and I eat so fast Mama raises her eyebrows at us.
No way we’re going to tell our mother Daddy’s in town. No telling what she’d do.
“Are you going to Daddy’s game?” Mama says it so calmly Molly and I look at each other, sure we must have heard her wrong.
“It’s okay.” Mama smiles at us. “I know he’s coming to town, girls.”
I swallow. “He may want to see me.”
“Well, I’m here for you if you need me.” She takes a second helping of potatoes.
“I love you, Mama.” I lean over and kiss her cheek.
“I hope Daddy doesn’t see us until the game’s over.” Molly practically runs to our seats in the stands with Celie and me struggling to keep up with her.
“Are you okay?” I ask her as we sit down. “You seem extra nervous, even considering the circumstances.”
“Sure. I’m fine.” She scans the ice. “There he is! On his team’s bench. He’s sitting with one of the players—see?”
I follow her pointing finger, and my heart drops into my stomach at the sight of my father.
I was a teenager the last time I laid eyes on him. Seeing him again after all this time is so strange. He looks different. Even from here, I notice the graying hair where red used to be, the more pronounced slump of his shoulders, the slower gait. He’s still vibrant and energetic as he moves behind the bench, shouting and gesticulating to different players, but the intensity is less…extreme.
“He’s aged,” I say.
“A lot,” Celie adds.
