When Rosamond proceeded down the aisle of a packed St. Margaret’s Cathedral, she was followed by a muted buzz of conversation that even the pipe organ’s magnificent offering couldn’t drown out.
Seated in the front pew, surrounded by a crowd of office staff and security force, sat President Johnson, looking very well pleased with himself and with the success of the mission. With the fate of the Grizzly Bear Ranch in limbo, he had decided to deed the property to Marshal Travis Yancey, in appreciation for services rendered.
The bride’s mother showed as her usual beautiful, stunning self, wearing a slightly modified mourning gown of navy silk. The bride’s sister, serving as maid of honor and equally beautiful, was dressed in soft springtime violet that complemented her rich brown curls and honey-colored eyes.
A rainbow of felicity seemed to surround the lovely bride. Beaming, she smiled and nodded at well-wishers, family, friends, and every one of the Yancey brothers scattered throughout the sanctuary. Her gown was a vision of white satin and lace, and she wore her mother’s treasured string of pearls as her only adornment.
At least until Travis placed the ring upon her finger, the ring set with green aventurine. A gemstone to match her eyes, he had told her. The clear, keen eyes behind the pert little wire-framed spectacles.
