Morgan’s Mercenaries: Heart of the Jaguar Page 33

by Lindsay McKenna

Ann gave him a dirty look. “No fair, Mike. I didn’t know what I was taking from you when you handed me that spike of orchids in Lima!”

“Oh, yes, you did, mi querida. On some level of yourself, your spirit knew. That’s why you grabbed them.”

“I did not grab them, Michael Houston, and you know it! You always embellish things so much!”

Laughing deeply, Mike rocked her in his arms and gave her a swift, hot kiss on her parted, smiling lips. “You can never outwit a jaguar. He will always trap you.”

“Pooh!” Ann muttered. “You were being just plain sneaky, Major Houston, and you know it!” She fingered the orchid in her hair. “But it’s a beautiful gift and a beautiful way to say that you love someone.”

“Sneaky?” Mike muttered, pretending to be wounded. “I’m not sneaky.”

“Okay, how about another adjective, like underhanded?”

His laughter rolled across the meadow, absorbed by the inconstant breeze and warming sunlight. As he held his wife and baby, he realized he had never been happier. The life that stretched out before them wouldn’t be easy, but Mike knew they had the strength and courage to weather whatever was thrown at them. And more important, they had love. Forever.
