Enigma:What Lies Beneath (Enigma Series Book 1) Page 7

by Kellen, Ditter

A red line appeared across the top of the screen that read Special Report, and a news reporter stood in front of Winchester Industries, speaking to the night watchman, Willie.

Abbie turned up the volume in time to hear Willie’s recount of the evening’s events.

“Doctor Sutherland said she was here to drop off a report that her father had asked for, else I would have never let her go up.”

The reporter glanced at the camera before turning back to Willie with more questions. “Is it true that Miss Sutherland used to work for Winchester Industries?”

Willie appeared pale and nervous. “Yes, ma’am, she did. But Abbie is a good sort. She wouldn’t have shot those men. That man that was with her has to be responsible, not her.”

“You mean the one that had been locked in the lab,” the reporter quickly amended.

“I don’t know. I wasn’t told anything about it. All I know was that Doctor Sutherland came in saying he was not to be disturbed and that there would be some men arriving in a few hours for a pickup. I was told to let them in and not ask any questions.”

A camera feed of Hauke and Abbie running across the parking lot of Winchester Industries suddenly appeared on the screen. The reporter’s voice spoke loud and clear as the clip played over and over.

“Three guards were allegedly gunned down in cold blood at Winchester Industries earlier tonight by the suspects you see here. Do not approach them as they are considered armed and dangerous. If you see or know the whereabouts of Doctor Abbigail Sutherland or the individual with her, please notify the Sheriff’s Department immediately.” A number abruptly appeared on the screen. “I repeat, they are armed and considered extremely dangerous.”

The woman continued speaking, but Abbie was no longer listening. Several emotions poured through her at once. Relief that Henry’s name hadn’t been mentioned in the report, shock that she and Hauke were being blamed for the death of a third person, and fear that she could be next.

She would never be able to return home, never see her father again or the friends and colleagues she’d come to know at the hospital where she’d worked the past few years. Life as she knew it was no more.

“Abbie?” Hauke’s pained voice carried out over the sound of the television.

Pressing mute on the remote, she jumped to her feet and scrambled toward the bathroom.

“What’s wrong?” Abbie barged in without knocking. She’d seen him in a state of undress before. Not that she’d ever get used to his nude form.

  On the contrary.

The site that greeted her pushed all other feelings from her mind. Hauke stood in the shower, covered in bubbles from head to feet, rubbing his eyes with soap-covered hands.

“It bloody burns. What did you do to me?”

The laugh that bubbled up couldn’t be stopped by a Mack truck. “You’re not supposed to get it in your eyes, and you used way too much.”

She climbed in behind him and guided him forward to the spray. “Here, let’s rinse it out. And stop wiping at your eyes. It’s only going to make it worse. We have to get as much of the soap off as possible,” she rushed out through fits of laughter.

“You laugh?” Hauke sputtered as Abbie attempted to reach his head.

“I’m sorry.” Another giggle escaped against her will. “Bend down a little. You’re too tall for me to help with your hair.”

Turning around, he suddenly dropped to his knees in front of her and tilted his head back under the water. “Is this easier?”

Abbie nearly swallowed her tongue. She couldn’t imagine anything sexier than Hauke on his knees, muscles rippling and water sluicing down his magnificent form.

“Yes, better,” she whispered, extending her hands toward his face. Her heart melted with the first touch of her fingers on his skin. The submissive position he allowed himself to be in showed an enormous amount of trust on his part. This big, dangerous alien from the deep…trusted her.

“I won’t let you down, Hauke.”

His beautiful green eyes slowly opened to gaze up at her in wonder. “And I will not disappoint you either, Abbie. I will give my life for you if it becomes necessary.”

And she believed him. He would die to keep her safe.

She found herself inching forward until her fingers were in his long, silky hair and his face touched her ribs.

  “Abbie?”

Ah, he was back inside her mind. Her eyes nearly rolled back in pleasure with the feel of his mental presence. “Yes, Hauke?”

  “Look at me.”

She was afraid to. Afraid not to. Afraid he would somehow disappear and take with him this incredible feeling she experienced only in his presence.

Abbie dropped her gaze to his upturned face, and her heart squeezed in her chest. She was falling in love with a being from another place, another species and possibly even another time.

Hauke’s arms came around her, and he slowly got to his feet, bringing her with him until they were on the same level.

Eye to eye, mind to mind, and heart to heart, their souls intertwined.

The beauty of it was incomprehensible to Abbie. She’d never felt anything remotely close to it in her thirty-two years.

He dipped his head and touched his lips to hers. Butterflies erupted inside her stomach to create a mind-numbing ache that centered between her thighs.

Abbie felt no shame in her surrender. No questions or doubts arose to hold her back from the man embracing her in his powerful arms. And he was a man, no matter where he came from or the differences in his genetics. Tonight, he was hers.

“Open for me.” The command was gentle, yet firm.

Her lips parted to allow him entrance. He licked along the underside of her top lip before softly sweeping the tip of his tongue along her teeth.

A groan escaped him when she boldly allowed her own tongue to mingle with his.

He continued pulling her tighter against his body, coaxing her into a near frenzy of need.

Abbie instinctively wrapped her legs around his waist and ground against him. She wanted him inside her— No, she needed him inside her more than she’d ever needed anything in her life.

“Hauke,” she mentally moaned, unable to stop her hips from moving. “Please.”

He nudged the curtain back with his elbow, stepped from the shower, turned off the water, and marched toward the closest bedroom with Abbie clinging to him every step of the way.

Her back touched the bed a moment later, and she tightened her legs around his waist, sucking on his tongue with a hunger she couldn’t control.

“Allow me to remove your garments. I want to feel your skin against mine.”

  “Yes,” she mentally conceded. “Hurry.”

  Chapter Twelve

Abbie watched Hauke through a haze of wonder while he gently removed her clothes. The reverence with which he touched every inch of skin he exposed humbled her.

How could she be this in tune with a man she’d met only the day before?

“Our bond formed many moons ago on the water’s shore, sweet Abbie. You were destined to be mine since that moment forth. I had not known until I once again looked into your eyes.”

She wholeheartedly agreed. She’d felt their connection all those years ago, had clung to it night after night until it’d faded over time and she’d eventually convinced herself it had all been a dream.

No matter what happened to her after this night ended, she would never regret her decision to give herself to Hauke. Nothing in her life had ever felt so right.

She held her breath as his knee slid between her thighs, and she parted them without reservation. Everything inside her cried out to surrender as he took possession of her mouth once again, his body coming down over hers.

She kissed him back with a desperation that stunned her. No matter how tightly she clung to him, how much she opened for him, she couldn’t seem to get enough.

“Relax.” His voice caressed her mind as sensually as his lips stroked hers
. “Close your eyes and trust me.”

She did trust him with everything she was or ever would be. Her lids eased shut.

Hauke broke off the kiss and slowly moved back until he knelt between her open thighs. Heat rushed to her face, and she instinctively wanted to draw her legs together.

  “Decorus.”

Abbie didn’t recognize the word. She wanted to ask him what it meant, but he was looking at her. She could feel his gaze touching every inch of her skin.

He must have read her thoughts. “Beautiful.”

His hands coasted up the inside of her thighs, stopping an inch from where she wanted him most.

Warmth radiated from his palms to pulse through her core. A vision of herself splayed out before him floated through her mind in erotic detail.

“I want to see you too.”

  “Not yet.”

His hesitation wasn’t lost on her. He had to know she’d seen him nude when she’d removed his pants. He was perfection in its finest form.

Hauke cupped her mound, and she suddenly didn’t care anymore. She would look her fill of him later.

The heat from his hand seemed to brand her, and she arched against it…seeking, craving.

He applied a gentle pressure and dipped a finger inside her. Abbie moaned and tilted her hips to give him better access. He inserted another and curved them up, pushing them in deeper.

  “You are too small…”

It took a moment for her to comprehend his growled words and that he’d spoken them aloud.

She opened her mouth to assure him that she might be different from the women of his species, and she felt confident she could take him, but then he inserted another finger. All thought scattered.

Abbie gripped the sheets to anchor herself as tiny electrical pulses from his fingertips traveled through the oversensitive circle of nerves he pressed against.

Every muscle in her body tensed with a fast-approaching orgasm. Her heart stuttered, her breath stopped, and time stood still as she hung suspended in a pool of sensation unlike any she’d ever known.

  “Fall into me.”

His words pushed her over the edge. She screamed with the force of the explosion that rocked her hips off the bed. Her toes curled, and moisture flooded her thighs as she continued contracting around his ever-pulsing finger.

She lay there for what seemed like forever, unable to move while mini aftershocks coursed through her abdomen.

  “Amor.”

Abbie opened her eyes and met Hauke’s hooded gaze. He stared back at her like a man starved. She wanted him more than she’d ever wanted anything in her life.

  She reached for him. “Please…”

“I will not take you.” The pained look on his face told her he was serious.

“You won’t hurt me. I trust you.” And she did.

He remained on his knees between her thighs, indecision obvious in his eyes.

Abbie sat up and let her gaze slowly drift down his incredible body. “Hauke. I know I’m not what you’re…” Her voice trailed off as his unbelievable erection came into view.

She knew her eyes had widened significantly, but she’d never imagined anyone could be that size. “You were pretty impressive before it… I just… Wow.”

Abbie tried to hide her nervousness by looking elsewhere, but he was too in tune to her emotions.

“Don’t go.” She grabbed onto his hand when he moved to get up.

  “You fear me.”

“I need you.” She rose up on her knees and rested her hands on either side of his face. “Look at me.”

He hesitated before meeting her gaze, and Abbie was struck by the amount of control he exhibited to keep from touching her. It only made her want him more.

“Let me love you. Please?” She brushed her mouth across his.

His body was strung tight enough that he could have been a statue.

“Lie back.” She gave him a gentle push and followed him down until she lay across his chest.

  “Abbie…”

“You asked me to trust you. Well, now I need you to trust me in return.”

His lips parted on a growl, but he didn’t resist.

Abbie took that as a go-ahead and lowered her mouth to his neck. “You smell so good.”

She kissed her way down his throat with a gentle suction, stopping to circle his nipples with her tongue. The sounds coming from him created a feeling of power and possessiveness inside her that felt exhilarating.

“Hauke?” She raked her teeth over his nipple.

  He flinched in response. “Yes.”

“Have you ever had oral sex?” Her face heated up, but she wasn’t backing off.

  “Explain.”

  “I’d rather show you.”

He rose up on his elbows to watch as she crawled down his body to kneel between his legs.

She wrapped her hand around the base of his shaft and gently lifted. He was thick enough that there was a significant gap from her middle finger to her thumb. Abbie knew she wouldn’t be able to take much of him, but she would make him feel good.

His abdominal muscles tightened as she lowered her mouth toward the mushroom-shaped head of his shaft.

  “Abbie?”

She ignored him and dipped the tip of her tongue into the small slit on top. Hauke hissed, and his ass came off the bed. She licked her way down and back up before sliding her lips over the head only to repeat the process.

A sound vibrated from his throat—part growl, part moan. She wasn’t sure. She only knew it was sexy as hell, and she didn’t want him to stop.

Her fingers instinctively gripped him tighter as she continued the downward slide of her mouth only to coast her way back up. He was too big for her to go more than a few inches, so she concentrated on the sensitive area underneath.

He suddenly sat up and lifted her off her knees. “I will not hold out.”

His speech pattern was almost as hot as his body. “You want me to stop?”

“Do you enjoy this mouth sex?”

His emotions were easy to read. She knew what he was asking. He wanted to taste her as well.

  “Yes. Very much.”

He tilted his head, seeming to study her.

“It’s the same concept as what I did to you. You know a woman’s body exceptionally well. I don’t think you will need any instruction.”

Hauke nodded once and practically tossed her onto her back. Before she had time to blink, his face brushed against the juncture of her thighs.

He didn’t lick her though; he inhaled her. Abbie lay completely still as he explored her most secret place. His hands slid up to her knees, pushing them up and out, opening her to his gaze.

Abbie had never felt more exposed or desired at the same time. He coasted his nose up the crease of her leg, across her mound, and down the other side. He was breathing her in. It was the most erotic thing she could have imagined.

He released her legs and laid his thumbs on the soft skin of her mound. With a gentle pressure he parted her and lightly swept her with his tongue. “Your scent is like nothing I have ever known. I want to keep it with me. Always.”

Abbie raised her head to watch him, and her breath caught in her throat.

His protective lenses were open to reveal several shades of green swirling in the depths of his eyes. It was like something out of a science fiction movie.

Her heart began to pound, her palms became sweaty, and energy pulsed between their bodies as if they were magnetized.

“Hauke?” Abbie felt he could see into her very soul. She couldn’t seem to look away from his eyes. Like the mirrors of a kaleidoscope…reflecting, shifting, ever changing.

“I could bathe in your flavor.” He penetrated her with his tongue before withdrawing and licking his way back up.

Abbie’s body jerked when he connected with her oversensitive bundle of nerves.

“Do not tense your muscles. I will stay gentle.” He flattened his tongue and softly swept it in an up
ward motion.

She didn’t want him to fear hurting her. She wanted him to make love to her. Freely.

  “Fall into me, Abbie.”

  “How?”

He removed his thumbs but left his tongue still covering her. “Give me your hands,” he mentally commanded.

Abbie grabbed two pillows from the bed and stacked them beneath her head to be able to watch what he did next.

She met him halfway as he reached for her hands and linked their fingers together.

Heat began to simultaneously radiate out from his tongue and both of his palms. Her stomach flinched with the first pulse of current entering her body.

The stimulation brought nerves to life she never knew she had. It was incredible and unbelievable.

Orgasmic contractions flowed through her like a tidal wave.

  “Do not tense.”

“Oh God. Oh God. Oh God. Hauke?”

  “Fall into me, Abbie.”

  “I don’t know how.”

  “Yes, you do.”

She felt the instant it happened—their minds linked and became one.

Everything disappeared but his emotions caressing hers, his voice, and his thoughts making love to her even as their bodies barely touched.

Abbie came apart. An orgasm flew up her spine in hot bursts of energy that rocked her very core. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, only ride it blissfully to its crest.

Hauke’s essence wrapped around hers, swirling, sliding, loving. Beautiful couldn’t begin to describe this experience. She never wanted it to end.

“Again.” His deep command triggered another round of delicious current while his mind continued making love to hers.

Tears of amazement spilled from her eyes, and that was okay. “Hauke? Come inside me.”

There was no question or hesitation in his response, and Abbie had never witnessed anything as sensual as Hauke crawling up her body.

He settled between her thighs, brought their linked hands to either side of her head, and covered her lips with his.

The broad head of his erection pressed against her, and she tilted her pelvis in invitation. The feel of him attempting to push inside her snapped any hold on the control she’d recently regained.
