“I am.” Shawn looked nervous as he stepped closer to Joanna, although he still held onto Jane’s hand.
Joanna’s mouth went dry and she swallowed down her nerves as it suddenly hit her what was happening. Surely, it was too soon? Where had Shawn gotten a ring from? Her forehead creased. She must have gotten it wrong. She was jumping to conclusions.
Breathe, her wolf advised. And enjoy the moment.
That’s easy for you to say, Joanna answered.
“Joanna.” Shawn dropped to one knee while Jane covered her mouth with her hand and giggled nervously. “Would you do me the honor…”
“Do us…” Jane prompted her dad.
“Would you do us the honor of being my wife…” He looked sideways at Jane.
“And my mom?” Jane broke into a smile bright enough to eclipse the sun.
“Yes.” There was no hesitation, no need for thought.
“Yay!” Jane let go of Shawn’s hand and leaped into Joanna’s arms. “Can I be your bridesmaid?”
“Of course,” Joanna answered. “We can go dress shopping together. If you’d like to.”
“Yes, please.” Jane hugged Joanna so tightly she nearly choked her.
“Do I get a hug, too?” Shawn asked.
“Always.” Joanna wrapped her free arm around Shawn and held him close.
This was about as perfect as life could get. She was about to become part of a new family. One that would grow, with any luck, when she and Shawn had a child of their own.
As the three of them stood in the kitchen hugging each other, it was a new beginning for them all.
Joanna could not wait to see what the future held. She was ready to put her past behind her and strike out anew with the man of her dreams and a child she loved by her side.
Epilogue
“What if she doesn’t like me?” Jane asked.
“Why would she not like you?” Shawn asked as he helped Jane into her new dress. This was a special occasion and Jane was incredibly nervous.
It’s not every day you get to meet the woman who saved your life, his cougar said.
I know, but how could anyone not like Jane? Shawn wished there was something he could say to chase away his daughter’s fears.
“I don’t know. The last time she saw me I was a tiny baby.” Jane twirled from side to side as she looked at her pretty dress in the mirror. “What if she likes babies more?”
“Yvette will love you just the way you are. She can’t wait to meet you.” Shawn grabbed a hairbrush off Jane’s nightstand and dragged it through her hair before braiding it.
“You are an expert,” Joanna came into Jane’s bedroom and sat down on the bed, a small gift-wrapped box in her hand.
“What do you have there?” Shawn asked, his eyes straying from the box to the ring on his mate’s finger. He could not wait to marry Joanna and make her his wife. It was like a dream come true.
“I have a gift for Jane.” Joanna held out the box to Shawn’s daughter. Her eyes widened in excitement as she reached out for it.
“Thank you.” Jane’s hand shook a little as she accepted the gift. “Can I open it now?”
“Sure.” Joanna watched as Jane carefully pulled on the bow and untied the shiny ribbon before peeling off the red foil gift wrap to reveal a box. Opening the lid, she inhaled deeply, and her eyes lit up. “It’s beautiful.”
“Wow.” Shawn loved the heart pendant Joanna had chosen for Jane. “Shall we put it on? I think it’ll look amazing with your dress and your braids.”
“Yes, please.” Jane turned around and looked in the mirror as Shawn carefully took the pendant from the box and placed it carefully around Jane’s neck.
“I love it.” Jane looked at herself in the mirror for a long minute or two before she slid off her seat and went to Joanna. “Thank you so much.” She flung her arms around Joanna’s neck and hugged her.
“You are most welcome.” Joanna dropped a kiss on Jane’s head. “Yvette will be so proud of the young lady you have become.”
“Do you think so?” Jane pulled back and wrinkled her nose.
“I know so.” Joanna looked up and turned to the window. “They’re here. Let’s go and meet them.”
Jane ran from the room, her feet carrying her down the stairs and to the front door. Joanna got up from the bed and headed for the door, but Shawn caught hold of her hand and drew her into his arms. “Thank you.”
“For what?” Joanna asked. “I didn’t buy you a gift.”
“No, but you gave me the best gift ever.” He kissed her lips and murmured, “You.”
“The gift that keeps on giving. The gift you can never return.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her body close to his. “I love you so much. I love being part of your life and Jane’s life.”
“And we love you.” He inhaled her scent. “You made us complete.”
Joanna sighed. “I want you to hold me forever, but we should go downstairs. This is a special day for Yvette and Jane.”
“It is.” He brushed his lips across hers and then took hold of her hand, leading her downstairs.
“Can I open the door?” Jane shuffled her feet as she stood by the front door.
“Sure.” Shawn held back, nervous about this first meeting between Jane and Yvette. Not that he would let Jane see his anxiety. But he was worried it might be overwhelming for both of them.
With a deep breath, Jane smoothed out her dress, shook her braids back from her shoulders and placed her hand over her heart locket as if it was a talisman that would keep her safe. Then she opened the front door.
Yvette was in a wheelchair, her legs still not strong enough to support her. Behind her stood Lance, his expression one of concern, too.
Yvette smiled nervously as she saw Jane for the first time since that fateful night. “Hi, Jane. I love your dress.”
“Thanks.” Jane hopped from foot to foot, then took a step forward and then another. Yvette opened her arms and they embraced, the connection between them would always be there.
“This makes it all worthwhile,” Yvette sobbed as she hugged the girl she’d saved.
She was right. It was worthwhile. As Shawn held his mate in his arms and watched the daughter he’d been blessed with, he knew he would not change anything. This was where they were supposed to be.
This is not the end of the story, his cougar said. This is just the beginning.
