Mission: A Venus Affair Page 14

by V. A. Jeffrey

We swiftly left toward the lobby. I kissed my wife and kids and sent them through the checkpoint. Mary turned around and waved at me. I waved back feeling a lump of sadness and fear that I fought to keep down. I had no idea what the future would look like now. I watched until they had disappeared through the checkpoint lines and toward the gate. Fishing around in my jacket pocket I found something soft, furry and lumpy there. I pulled it out and looked down. It was Reese, Mary’s teddy bear. Holding Reese firmly in hand and holding back the tears, I turned to leave for the Vermillion.

  Now, to the business.

The general population on Earth was just now waking up to the aliens living among us and it would only be a few days before hysteria started if something wasn’t done. I’d noticed a few people in Vepaja giving me odd stares here and there but I’d been too busy to pay it much attention. The Black Fleet juggernaut was still on the way, much closer than it seemed if Will and Chip’s suspicions about another jumpgate were true. There was the storm maker, a possible deadly weapon that none of us had ever encountered. There was the matter of the amazing, disappearing hive ship that could no longer be traced. And then there was the disastrous unfolding of political chaos and violence on Syzygy.

No sneak attack could be mounted against the loyalist bastards this time. This little matter on Venus was positively providential.

Play time was over. Stop-gap battles and tit-for-tat shadow tactics were over. The true battle for humanity was about to begin.
