  CHAPTER ONE

THERE. THAT’S THE last of it. Raven set the box on the bedroom floor. Not bad. Living room just big enough for a loveseat. Kitchen built for one. A bedroom that could fit…a bed. The realtor had been right—shoebox described the house to a T. But that suited her just fine.

Not a lot to clean. No room for an interloping guest. Just Raven, her things, and undisturbed backcountry out her back door. She tugged open the sliding glass door and glanced outside. Nubby pines, wild grasses, the occasional wildflower. All leading down to a secluded lake. Everything you’d want in a view. And it was all hers. Time to take a scenery break.

She stepped out onto the back porch and—Oh, no! She heard the crack before she fell. Boards broke, wood splintered and forget tranquility. She was falling. Fast. Her ass hit the porch with a mighty whomp and clouds of dust erupted. Shit. So much for move-in ready.

As the last dust cleared, she took stock. Her legs had disappeared into a gaping hole in the back porch. Damn. If her ass hadn’t been too big to fit through the joists, she’d have been swallowed up by jagged wood and decades of dirt and…was that an animal burrow? Gross. Thank God for mocha chocolate chunk.

With a grimace, she scooted back and eased her legs out of the mess to inspect the damage. Rot. Lots of it. Even the boards that hadn’t collapsed were spongy to the touch. Not something the realtor thought worthy of a mention. Super. Raven scrambled onto her feet and hurried back inside. It was a setback, but not major. She was still starting again in a different town with a place all her own. It just wasn’t so new. Or clean. She wiped off her hands on her jeans.

  Not a problem a carpenter couldn’t fix.

“Hey, look alive. We’ve got a job.” Bruce waved the scrap of paper in the air as the door to the shop shut behind him.

His partner put down an invoice and glanced up. “By the way you’re bouncing up and down like a kid with candy, it’s got to be a good one. Something big?”

  “Nope. Sexy, though.”

Hank’s eyebrow shot up. “Sexy? Here in Mill Creek?”

“Yep.” Bruce strode over to the wall of tools and grabbed the pre-packed duffel. “You heard about the woman who moved into Fred Dawson’s old place?”

“You mean that shack out on the lake? The realtor got some sucker to buy it?”

Bruce nodded. “A woman from Seattle. And from what Rita said, she’s a real looker. Long, dark hair. Big, brown eyes. Hips that don’t quit.”

“The clerk at Corner Grocery said that?”

“Well, sort-of.” Bruce slung the bag over his shoulder. He didn’t know why the prospect of meeting the woman had him tied up in knots. But it did.

Hank pushed back from the table. “So what’s the job?”

“She fell through the back porch this morning.”

Hank whistled. “Didn’t anyone tell her that place is older than dirt? I wouldn’t be surprised if all the wood out there’s as squishy as a sponge cake.”

“Look. All I know is that she called and wants us to come out ASAP and see if we can fix it. We’ve got everything we need. We can load up the truck, haul out there and check it out.”

  “You mean check her out.”

Bruce grinned. “Maybe she’s adventurous. She is from the city.”

Hank rolled his eyes. “If she’s as hot as you claim, she’s probably had half the men in this town already knocking on her door. And you know how hard it was to find Rebecca.” Hank scratched his short beard. “The chance that some random woman who’s just moved to Mill Creek is going to go for not one, but two carpenters, is pretty slim.”

“We’ll never know unless we try.” Bruce knew it was a long shot. Rebecca had changed their lives—turning what had been failed relationships and lonely nights into a chance a more. All three of them together. But she’d left them. Moved out of Mill Creek and out of their lives.

Finding another woman as open and accepting as her would be beyond lucky. A woman who would love not one, but two men. But something about Raven…her name, her voice when they spoke on the phone…His gut told him they had a chance.

Hank pushed back his chair and grabbed his tool belt off a hook on the wall. “Alright. Let’s go. But before you get all hot and bothe
red, let’s fix the damn porch.”

A few minutes later and they were driving Hank’s beat-up Chevy down the main street of town. Past the grocery, the drugstore, the bar. Past the historic houses with gingerbread trim and planter boxes stuffed with flowers. And on out into the country. At last, they pulled into her drive and parked the truck next to a beat up Subaru. Hmm. She likes to rough it.

Without waiting for Hank, Bruce bounded up the front steps and knocked on the door. A minute later, a woman with lush, dark hair and kiss-me lips was pulling it open. All curves and skin with a slip of a dress and bare feet. She had him imagining a roughhewn four poster bed and the things they could do in it. All three of them.

  “Bruce?”

He blinked and stuck out his hand. “Yes. And you’re Raven?”

  She nodded.

  “Did your mom love birds?”

She smiled. “No. I was born with a whole head of black hair. It’s lighter now, but my mom thought it fit. I know. It’s kinda weird.”

He laughed as Hank loped up the steps. “It’s not weird. It’s beautiful.” Bruce motioned toward Hank. “This is my partner, Hank Barton.”

As Hank stuck out his hand, Bruce took a closer look. Her name suited her heart-shaped face and bright blue eyes. Her thick, squeeze-me hips. Body he could wrap his arms around and get lost in. Bruce scrubbed his face with his hand. It’d been a long time since lust had hit him that hard. So immediate and intense. Primal. He needed to get it together. “How about you show us that hole in your porch?”

  “Of course. It’s this way.”

She stepped back and he squeezed through the open doorway with Hank on his heels. Half unpacked boxes were stacked around the place, furniture sat at awkward angles, and a bucket full of cleaning supplies perched on the counter. “Did you just move in?”

“Mm-hmm. Yesterday.” She walked through the living room and kitchen and pushed a sliding glass door open. “I took a break to relax and enjoy the view and instead I ended up smack on my ass halfway through my back porch. There’s the damage.”

Raven pointed at the gaping hole in the porch. Multiple floor boards had split and buckled in a tangled mess into the crawlspace. Bruce bent down and Hank crouched next to him.

“Wow. Fred really did let the place go.”

  Raven blinked. “Fred?”

“The prior owner. He wasn’t big on home improvement.”

She scowled at Hank and Bruce bit back a grin. Even her frown was sexy.

“Now someone tells me. So can you fix it?”

The corners of Hank’s mouth twitched. “Of course. We’re carpenters. We could get started right now if you’d like.”

Her eyes lit up. “You could?”

Bruce nodded. “Let me grab my clipboard and I’ll work up a quote.”

A few minutes later and they were all standing outside, going over the specifics.

“This is great. And you’ll replace all the bad boards? I’ll be able to walk out back, put out a few chairs?”

  “Yep. It’ll be mostly brand-new.”

Raven let out a pleased breath. “You two are lifesavers. I’ll make some iced tea. I’m sure you’ll get hot out here.” She gave them both a smile and turned to walk inside. With every step, her ass swayed underneath her pale cotton dress. Up. Down. Wibble, wobble. A rhythmic beat that shot straight to Bruce’s groin as he braced himself on the front porch post. Damn.

Hank flipped down the tailgate of the truck and Bruce tore himself away from the view. “She’s gorgeous. And just our type.” He thought of Rebecca’s curvy body, how she fit so well between them. Raven would too if she were willing.

His partner rolled his eyes. “That doesn’t mean she’d be interested. For all you know she’s got a boyfriend. A husband.”

“I didn’t see a ring. And all the stuff sitting around? Only women’s things.”

  “I think you’re obsessed.”

“No. I’m observant. You’d rather just stick your head in the grass and forget what it was like. What we could have again. I don’t want to be single the rest of my life, Hank. I want a woman. For both of us.”

Hank’s lips thinned into a grimace. “Don’t get your hopes up. You’ll only be disappointed.”

Why was he being so cynical? “You act like it’s impossible. That no way another woman would let two men love her. You’re selling both of us short.”

“Let’s just fix the porch, okay? She’s probably wondering what the hell we’re doing out here talking like a pair of chicks.” Hank tugged a two by six out of the truck and hauled it up onto his shoulder. Without another word, he headed around to the back of the house and the job they’d been hired to do.

Bruce grabbed the tool bag with a frown. He wasn’t going to let Hank ruin this chance. Even if Raven shut them down, it was worth it. And who knows, maybe she’d say yes.

Raven bopped around the kitchen, digging out a pitcher and tea and setting it up to brew. All the while thinking about the two delicious carpenters outside. Bruce Hastings and Hank Barton. A thrill coursed through her and she glanced out front.

Bruce bent over the open tailgate and tugged a piece of lumber out of the truck. Short blond hair, thick, muscled arms. Massive frame. And Hank. Mmm. She loved a man with a beard. And she could tell by the way he carried himself, a whole lot more hid under that work shirt. She wished it were hotter so they’d have to strip. She bit her lip and grinned. Ripping out rotting boards worked up a sweat, right?

Two gorgeous, sexy men. Right there working on her back porch. Her insides had done a somersault as soon as she’d opened the door. And her clit had seriously throbbed. But she’d moved to Mill Creek to get away from men. Not to fall into bed with two. Damn it for shitty timing.

Visions of Greg filled her head. His scowl as she packed her last bag and threw in her car. His fist as he planted it smack in the drywall beside the front door. She’d spent too many wasted years hoping he’d change. Be the man she knew he could be. But all that got her was a beer drinking asshat who lied to her face and would rather watch the game than pay attention to his girlfriend. Thank god she’d left his sorry butt.

She glanced up as Hank hoisted another plank onto his shoulder. Starting over in Mill Creek was her shot at independence. A chance to be on her own. No matter how hot Hank’s ass looked in those jeans or how sexy Bruce’s grin, she wasn’t going down that road. Not now. All they’d get from her was a cold glass of iced tea and a paid-in-full invoice.

Hank disappeared with the wood around the side of the house and Raven bit her lip. His shoulders flexed, his biceps bunched, and she wanted to be that timber. A pang of unsatisfied need echoed in her core and she shook her head. Get it together.

The wood landed on the back porch with a thud and Raven couldn’t help herself. She snuck over to the sliding glass door and stood just inside. Can they see me through the tinted glass? She fought down the urge to giggle like a schoolgirl as Bruce slipped on a pair of work gloves. With a grunt, he tugged on a rotted board and tore it off the porch. He tossed it over the rail and onto the grass. Oh, my.

As Bruce tore off another board, Hank strode up and dumped a pile of new lumber. He bounded up the steps and before Raven could blink, he’d hopped down into the hole Bruce had just made and lent a hand. In minutes, they’d stripped the porch of all the broken, rotting wood and soaked their shirts in sweat. The damp cotton clung to their chests like saran wrap and every heaving breath showed off chiseled muscles.

Wow. I have lived in the wrong town my whole life. Raven shifted back and forth on her feet and bit her lip. She could watch them all afternoon if her body could stand it. As the sun climbed higher in the sky, Hank stood up and grabbed his shirt by the hem. He’s not. Oh…oh my goodness. In one fluid tug, he stripped off the soaked fabric and hung it on the porch rail. Raven swallowed. Broad and built, his shoulders blotted out the rising sun as sweat ran in rivulets down the furrow of his spine.

She stood transfixed until the sliding d
oor slid open and her mouth fell along with it.

“You did mention iced tea, right?” Hank raised an eyebrow and Raven clamped her mouth shut. It took every ounce of self-control not to lower her gaze to his heaving chest and ripped abs.

She managed a nod. “I did. I’ll get it. Just one second.” She spun around, hustled into the kitchen, and poured a glass. As she turned back, Hank reached out and took it from her. His fingers slid over hers and the heat made her jump.

“I appreciate the tea. It’s mighty warm for June.” He winked and brought the glass to his lips. Down, down his throat it all rushed. Gulp after gulp. As the ice hit his teeth, Raven jumped.

I have to stop this. She took a deep breath and his musky scent hit her hard. It rumbled through her body like a roller coaster on wooden rails. She wanted him. His sweat-covered body pinning her to the wall. Lush lips pressing against hers. Short beard scraping her cheek. She’d barely said five words to the man and she wanted to drop her panties and give him everything.

He handed back the empty glass with a nod. “Thank you.”

  “Y—you’re welcome.”

  “So, you live here alone?”

She nodded again. “Yep. Just me.”

He inched closer and she stepped back. Her ass hit the cabinets and she reached behind her with shaking fingers to set the glass on the counter.

  “No husband? Boyfriend?”

  “No.”

He looked her up and down—gaze raking over her body until she felt naked and fevered. “I find that hard to believe.”

  “Why?”

“Because you’re gorgeous.” Heat rolled off him in waves and hit her bare arms. “And sexy. That dress? The way it hugs your hips. Your ass. It makes a man—”

He broke off and she almost whimpered. “What?”

  “Think very dirty things.”

Raven bit her lip. Oh my God. She’d never been spoken to like that. Never been so…turned on by dirty talk. She opened her mouth to say something—anything other than kiss me!—but Hank stepped back. “I should get back to the job. You did hire us to fix the porch. I’d hate to disappoint you.”
