Prologue
“So where the hell are we going now?” Matthew grumbled. The young wolf was one angry pup, but he needed them. He wouldn’t admit it, but he did. He was abused and beaten for years with his pack. His parents had abandoned him on the doorstep of a pack of wolves in Texas about six years ago, with a note that said they couldn’t handle him. It said he went through his first shift and the boy was now too wild. They hoped the pack could show him how to be a wolf, and how to be a man. The Alpha there gave him to an old couple to look after, but all they did was make him work day and night on their farm, until he just fell into bed exhausted. They would keep meals from him as a punishment if he didn’t finish his chores or didn’t do them to the old coots’ liking. They would also beat him at any opportunity. The kid had a lot of anger inside him, but Evan couldn’t blame him after everything the kid had been through.
He didn’t know everything about Matthew’s past, but what he did know was that his life before the pack wasn’t all sunshine and roses either. One of the boys from the pack who hated Matthew told the Alpha that Matthew forced him to kiss him. So Matthew was dragged to the Alpha. Of course the Alpha and the pack believed this other boy. He had been born into the pack and Matthew was an outsider. The Alpha spent two years trying to torture the gay out of the boy.
Of course it didn’t work, but what it did do was make Matthew terrified of being who he was. He was even afraid to admit it to himself. But Evan knew he was gay. He had caught Matthew gazing at the other boys many times, especially Josh, and the look in his eyes was that of longing. When Matthew didn’t know that others were watching, he let his guard down and his true desires were right there in his eyes. None of the other boys hid from who they were. They were all out and proud. Well, until Matthew came along eight months ago. Then three of the boys, Tucker, Mitchell, and Syn, all wolves, who became Matthew’s followers, started to deny their inner selves, too. It took mont
hs for Even to get Matthew to open up even a little to him and get Matthew to stop calling Evan and the other boys derogatory names. But the boy still used all those hurtful words when around others.
Evan knew it was all just a way for Matthew to protect himself, the tough-guy act, but it wasn’t making Evan’s life any easier. He and his boys were doing fairly well in the New Mexico pack they were in. As long as they stayed to themselves and kept a low profile, the Alpha and the pack generally left them alone. But then he was sent Matthew.
A friend of his in the human world, who knew about shifters, was a social worker. Whenever he came across one of these homeless shifter boys, he would send them Evan’s way.
The Alpha in New Mexico became fed up with Matthew’s shenanigans and wanted them out. He told Evan that they knew that he and his wards were gay and their kind was no longer welcome. They had twenty-four hours to clear out. They drove for sixteen hours, until Evan just couldn’t keep his eyes open anymore. They stopped for the night in a dump of a motel in Tennessee. One of his boys―Josh, a bobcat shifter―went out to find them some food, and when he came back, he told Evan that he ran into a wolf shifter in town, and they got to talking. The guy told him about a wolf shifter pack in Pennsylvania that was made up of all gay wolves. Evan couldn’t believe his ears. They stayed in the motel for a few days while Evan did some research on what Josh was told.
Evan had been afraid to contact the council because of wolves’ stance on homosexuality, but he had no choice now. He needed to see if what this guy told Josh was true. He went to the library and used their computer. He logged into the council website and sure as shit, there was a pack of wolves in Pennsylvania that consisted of ninety percent gay wolves. Not only that, but they were sanctioned by the council and the Alpha was listed as having a fate-mated male mate.
Evan couldn’t believe what he was reading. There was no way there were gay true mates. He copied down the phone number of the pack and headed back to the motel. Using the phone in the room, he called the number and was told he needed to speak with the Beta. He was put through and the man made him nervous right off the bat. He sounded friendly, but intimidating over the phone.
Evan was scared of telling the Beta why he was calling, but what other choice did he have? If he didn’t find somewhere for him and his boys soon, then the human government would come after them and take the boys from him. They would put them in human foster care and that would be too dangerous. So Evan swallowed his fear and told the Beta his situation. The Beta confirmed all the information Evan had found out and said that he would meet with him in Sanctuary, Pennsylvania. So that’s where they were headed. Hopefully to their new home.
“Just relax and enjoy the ride, Matthew,” Evan answered. “We should be there by tomorrow.”
“So where is ‘there’ that we’re going to?” Shane asked.
“It’s a wolf pack in Sanctuary, Pennsylvania. The Beta there says that the information that Josh found out is true,” Evan explained.
“Yeah, right,” Matthew said, clearly unconvinced. “The guy is probably lying his ass off. We’re all probably headed to our deaths.”
“Matthew,” Evan admonished in warning.
“What? Oh come on, Evan, you can’t believe that all this shit about this pack is true. A gay Alpha with a true male mate? Please.” He rolled his eyes. “The council probably put that shit on their site to lure gay shifters there so they wouldn’t have to hunt them down. Nice and easy, bring the prey to you.”
Matthew had a point. What if this was some kind of trick to lure gay shifters to them to get rid of them? Maybe they shouldn’t go. Maybe he should find somewhere else for them. No, he needed to find out. If it was on the up-and-up, then it was a safe place for his boys. They needed to continue on.
“Well, that guy told me about it first. Said that it’s the pack where the best kill enforcer lives. Said he’s the Beta and there isn’t another shifter who comes close to this guy’s level,” Josh said from the back seat of the bus Evan was driving.
“And you believed him?” Matthew said in annoyance. “That only proves my point. There is no way the best kill enforcer is gay. He’s a man, a real man, so if he’s at this pack, then sure as fuck he ain’t gay.”
“Language, Matthew,” Evan said.
“Do you really think this place is real, Evan?” Bailey, another wolf shifter, asked in his shy, quiet voice. Evan peeked at the boy in the mirror above his head and found Bailey sitting next to Josh, as usual. The two were found together and were pretty inseparable. He glanced at Bailey and saw the fear in the boy’s eyes. He sat there chewing on his thumbnail. A sure sign he was getting really stressed. Evan needed to change the subject before Bailey had another panic attack.
“Yes, Bales. I do think this place is safe,” he answered and flashed the cutie a reassuring smile. “And you boys better remember to be on your best behavior. This might be our last hope. Let’s not blow it.” They all answered with grunts and groans. Evan shook his head at their attitude and continued on to what he hoped would be their sanctuary.
Chapter 1
“So, how did it go?” Syn asked anxiously as Evan walked through the door of the room they were staying in at the local motel.
Evan gave them a sad, worried face as he walked in with his shoulders slumped. He walked to the desk and grabbed the back of the chair. He shook his head and sighed heavily.
The boys all exchanged worried looks. They blew it. They were going to be chased out of this pack, too. Evan looked wrecked, like he just couldn’t do this anymore. What were they going to do now? Bailey didn’t want to go into the human foster system and he sure didn’t want to go back to the streets. Tears started to well in his eyes and he began to chew on his thumbnail. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder. He didn’t even need to look to see who it was. He knew it was Josh. Josh was his best friend, his savior, his protector. He and Josh spent three years together living on the streets until they were picked up by Evan. They have been with Evan for two years now, but Josh still looked out for him. He still made sure no one ever fucked with him.
“No matter what, it’s gonna be okay, Bales. I promise,” Josh whispered in his ear. He looked at his friend and gave him a small smile as he nodded. He looked back to Evan and saw the man’s shoulders shaking. Oh no, please gods, please. If Evan’s crying then we’re definitely doomed, Bailey thought to himself. Josh stepped behind him and wrapped his arms around his waist, bringing him against his body and holding him tight. “It’s okay, Bales,” Josh whispered again.
“Evan, what the hell happened and where is Matthew?” Shane asked.
Evan turned to them with his head down. He took a deep breath and sighed. He lifted his head and the smile that he wore was the biggest, brightest smile Bailey had ever seen on the man.
“We can stay,” he said happily. “Not only can we stay, but the Beta is sending a realtor over to show us some houses.”
They all looked at him in disbelief. “A house? Like…a real house?” Sage asked.
“Yes, a real house,” Evan said and sat in the chair. “We met with the Beta and get this, that little guy he was with last night in town is his true mate, but that’s not all. He has two fate-mated male mates.”
“So one of them is a cat shifter?” Josh asked with excitement.
“Yes, he’s an ocelot. But there is also a pride here. The Winthrope pride from Napa, California, was destroyed in the rogue attacks and the leader, his…two…male…mates, and the surviving members are all here. The Alpha is having a neighborhood built just for them on the other side of his lands, so that Leader Winthrope can have his pride back.”
“Wow, this Alpha sounds too good to be true,” Tucker said.
“He is good, and it’s all true. Alpha Micah Angel is the prophesied Alpha Prime. That’s what all these people are doing in his town. They came to pledge allegiance to him, his male mate, the Heart, and the new council.”
“So what we heard is true? He’s
the Alpha Prime?” Syn asked in shock. Evan nodded. “Holy shit.” Syn dropped down onto the bed.
“His lands?” Josh asked.
“Alpha Angel owns all of this. The lands, the houses, the businesses. He owns it all. He keeps everything in the pack so humans can’t come in. We got to meet him, too. Oh and we met one of the enforcers and his male mate. An omega, who…likes to…wear…dresses.” Evan said hesitantly in a whisper.
“Really?” Sage asked in excitement.
“Yes, Sage, really,” Evan answered him with a smile and winked. Sage returned the smile and bit his lip. “And this omega, Raffy, is cousin to the Alpha. They accept everyone here. They don’t judge. I think we’re finally safe, boys.”
“So where is Matthew?” Tucker asked, and Evan laughed.

“Evan! Evan!” Bailey yelled as he ran into their new home. It was so beautiful. It was an old Victorian with lots of space and only two of them had to share a room. Evan gave them the master bedroom so they would have more room and Josh and Bailey took that room. They didn’t mind sharing a room. They had spent the past five years together sharing pretty much everything, and it made Bailey feel safer having Josh around.
“Bailey! What is it?” Evan asked in concern as he ran in from the kitchen.
“Guess what, Evan?” Bailey said in excitement.
“What?”
“I got a job!” Bailey said happily.
“Oh, Bales, that’s great. Where? When do you start?” Evan asked and led Bailey into the kitchen where he was making dinner.
