“As Reverend Santiago said, let us not mourn my father’s death but celebrate his life. That’s what he’d have really wanted.”
I broke away, making my way over to the coffin. I hunched over beside it, and with a heavy sigh, whispered the words: I forgive you.
My forgiveness meant nothing now, but if there was a life beyond, I hope he’d hear it so that his afterlife may see him resting easy. And as I looked up into the crowd, I saw Johnny Ortega one final time, giving me an approving nod of his head.
This life we all live can be a travesty if that’s how you look at it, but there’s always a brighter side if that’s how you want it to be. It’s a matter of perspective—good comes with good and bad with bad.
But now it was onward into a hopeful future, always ready for what may come.
