As careful as we always were with Pebbles, Hunter upped security protocols there as well. We only hired one guard for Pebbles because if Julia brought the kids there while she trained, Trey was obviously there. Most times, I was too.
The more this guy started to unravel, the more I suspected this had little to do with anything related to Ask Nikki. This was personal. He sent a text that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I felt like something was staring me in the face and I was missing it.
A couple of days before the meeting with Hunter and Morgan, I poured over the phone numbers he used and the messages he sent. I got a hit on one of the numbers and that’s when I remembered something Madison had told me. Following that line of thinking, I started to dig further. I had a strong suspicion I had figured this guy out, but I wasn’t happy about it. I decided to bring my information to the meeting, so I could show it to Trey.
When Madison, the kids, and I got to Hunter’s house, Trey was just arriving as well. Hunter greeted us at the door, and I saw that Morgan and Julia were already there. We chatted for a few moments and then the kids ran off to play. Hunter asked Julia and Madison to stay with us.
Sure enough, they laid out the plans they had for the new division. They spoke about it in depth so that we had full understanding of what it entailed. Then they offered for Trey and me to head up the security team. Hunter handed us each a folder. When I opened mine, it showed what my salary would be and the benefits package. It was all much more than I anticipated.
“Idg, I asked you to stay because I want you to know, even if they take this job, our priority is to make sure we keep you safe. That won’t change. Madison, I want you to be aware what this job involves. You and Jace are getting married, so what you think about this is important.” Hunter focused his attention on Julia and Madison.
Madison and I had already spoken, and I knew she supported me if I wanted to take the job.
“We don’t trust anyone more than we trust you both. Whether it’s TechStone or keeping Jules safe. You would have a full team under you at TechStone. You guys would get to vet out candidates and would have autonomy over choosing your team,” Morgan added.
“I don’t want to put any pressure on you, Trey. But, I am only going to consider doing this if you are involved.” The more I had thought about the possibility of us being asked to head this up, the more I knew that this was something I wanted to do partnered with Trey.
Trey smiled. “Good, because I was going to say the same thing.”
“Looks like you have two new heads of security.” I grabbed Madison’s hand and squeezed it, thanking her for her support.
“Fantastic! Let’s celebrate with dinner. We can talk business and do paperwork next week.” Hunter stood up shook my hand and then Trey’s.
“That decision was probably easier than deciding what we are going to eat for dinner,” Morgan joked.
They all started tossing around dinner ideas while they filed out of the room. Trey hung back with me.
“You’ve got something on Julia’s stalker, don’t you?” he asked as soon as they were out of earshot.
This is why we were going to make a great team. We read each other well. I pulled the envelope out and handed it to him.
“He slipped with this last message. I made some notes from some things I picked up on with his wording. The intel on what I got on the latest number is in there. It made me think about something Madison mentioned a little while back.” I rubbed the back of my neck as Trey read through the packet.
Trey looked up and watched me for a moment. “You think you might know who this is.”
“I do. And if I’m right, it’s going to affect them all.”
Author’s Note
Thank you for reading Jace and Madison’s story! If this is the first time you’re are reading a book in The Jersey Series and want to read more about many of the other characters in Knowing You, check out the first book in the series, Stone In Love. Stone In Love is Morgan and Julia’s story.
The third book of The Jersey Series will focus on Trey and Callie. I love the idea of the strong, confident (sometimes cocky!), woman magnet Trey being involved with the sweet, timid, inexperienced Callie. I think she might just be what makes him a little less sure of himself and brings him to his knees!
