BJ nodded. “I did. Terrible thing,” he said, with a grin on his lips.
Midnight looked at him for a long moment. “You know, they can’t figure out how he ended up in gen pop,” she said. General population was a section of the prison that someone like David Ronning, charged with child molestation, would never have been put in.
BJ made a sucking sound through his teeth, shaking his head ruefully. “Bloody shame.”
Midnight narrowed her eyes at him. “I’d hate to think you had anything to do with this, Mr. Sparks…”
“Well, AG Chevalier,” BJ said, pointedly using her title. “You can rest assured that BJ Sparks had nothing to do with it.” He looked at her directly.
Midnight turned her head slightly, giving him a sidelong glance. “And if Midnight Debenshire asked one Brenden James O’Malley, what would he say?”
“He’d say never fuck with one of his people, or it’ll get you dead,” BJ said, his thickly accented English a low growl.
Midnight’s eyes widened ever so slightly at the malice in BJ’s voice, but then she grinned and nodded.
“I’ve always liked him,” Midnight said, leaning in to kiss BJ on the lips. “Just make sure he’s careful to cover himself.”
“He always is.”
Midnight nodded and walked away, BJ watching her.
“Never would have believed that one,” Devlin said with a low whistle.
“Always best to hide in plain sight, my friend,” BJ said wisely.
In Plain Sight was the name of a CD released by Memphis Lassiter. It included a duet written by BJ Sparks, featuring himself and Memphis, entitled “Darkest Before the Dawn.” Kieran and Memphis got married a month later in Las Vegas; Kieran’s parents flew in for the wedding and loved Memphis on sight. Larry Lassiter gave his daughter away.
