“We’re stuck here. All of us. You guys too.”
“We actually like it here. But yes, we cannot leave either.”
“Huh. Maybe, I looked at all this the wrong way.”
“I want you here.”
He felt himself flush with his desperate admission, eyes averted as he waited for his human’s answer.
“I know you do, big guy. Believe it, you made it more than clear. I’m starting to- I think that. Shit. Sometimes I really feel like I belong here and that’s terrifying. I wonder how I’ll be after years here. I know I won’t want to go and- K’Aran. All my life has been dedicated to exploring space, traveling, securing the future of mankind by seeking new knowledge, by guarding those qualified to make new discoveries. Now… I feel adrift. Pointless.”
K’Aran understood, he really did. He could see himself feeling the same if everything that he knew, everything that he expected from his future suddenly got torn away. He nodded, tongue tied and unsure what he could say to make it easier, better.
“You’re a marshmallow, you know that? I can see all your thoughts on your face. ”
“That’s...good?”
“It’s very good. Different. I need time, K’Aran . I can’t be what you want-”
“I want you to be happy. Anything you need, I’ll try to make it happen.”
“And there you go again.”
His human sighed and K’Aran flinched. He’d said something wrong again. Outside the sky was slowly turning green, the start of a new day quickly catching up on them and the drakar wanted to close his eyes and pretend. Pretend he was home. Pretend that his kadush was still asleep as K’Aran gently mapped his beloved face. Pretend that he could be what his human needed to be happy.
“You know what? Fuck this. I’m alive. Stuck here, but alive. Healthy, safe and free, for the most part at least.”
Than’s eyes glinted purple in the dawn’s first rays and K’Aran’s breath hitched.
“Let’s go home. You can show me how to access the video archive in the tapas and then we can train with the guys again. I want to learn to do that backflip thing if it’s the last thing I do. Later on you should invite you parents again-”
K’Aran followed, his mate’s words pouring over him like the purest kalas unburdening his very soul. This was what he wanted. His human fighting for his happiness, lively laughing at his side as they headed home. He didn’t have any illusions that it’ll be easy, they were at most tentative friends right now. And purple eyes or not, K’Aran would not rely on Arkana to give this to him. She’d already brought Than here, from this point it was all on K’Aran.
“Come on, I’ll race you. Catch me if you can, dragonfly!” Than’s smile cut and K’Aran’s hearts skipped a beat. The temple swished shut behind them, a light veil of kalas fell from the morphing sky and the ground sang under their feet in rhythm with the humming trees as they rushed past laughing breathlessly.
And so it all began…
About the Author
Aeryn Jaden loves to read. Loves it so much that some days she doesn’t know what reality is anymore. Her friends and family usually have to yell a bit and remind her. Must be why she’s
twenty eight and still searching for a special person of her own. The second best thing in the
world for Aeryn is writing. Writing keeps her relatively sane and clears the voices in her head
clamouring for her attention (meaning the characters’ voices, she’s not that crazy to randomly
hear voices! Yet.). She was born in Romania but cannot stay put. One year you’ll find her in England, the next in Greece or Belgium. Who knows where her restless feet will carry her next... One thing remains constant and that is her totally healthy Internet addiction. So you can find her on Facebook or email her at [email protected] or better yet at her

She’ll love to hear from you so please stop by!
