  “Okay,” I said, turning to Barry with a grin. “Ready for a swim?”

  He surprised me by jumping up and making a mad dash for the ocean. Laughing, we watched him run through the first few waves and dive under a big one. Then Jeff and Mom and I all raced in after him.

  The cold, salty water felt great. I caught the first breaker and bodysurfed it all the way in to shore. I headed back out to catch another wave. This time I let its foamy force tumble me over and over. Then I straightened out and shot up from the water into the warm summer air.
