“It’s a great area.” He narrowed his eyes in a failed attempt at a stern look. “We didn’t come down here to work though.” Luke lifted a hand over his mouth and cleared his throat. “However, perhaps we should fix this one up for ourselves.”
“Ourselves?” Josie’s eyebrows lifted and she held his gaze. “What are you saying?”
Luke took her hands in his. “There’s something I’d like to ask you.”
Josie’s cheeks colored and she stared at his hands over hers.
He released one of her hands, retrieved a small box from his pocket, and dropped down to one knee in the sand. He flicked open the box with his thumb, and she gasped when she saw the diamond he’d spent hours picking out.
She took the box and tried to speak but couldn’t manage more than an “Oh…”
“I love you, Joselyn Bell. There isn’t anyone else I want in my kayak for all the sharks of life that come our way.”
Josie’s eyes watered and she chuckled.
“It’s a really bad metaphor, huh?” Luke shook his head and grinned. Why had that sounded so much better in his mind? “I don’t know if I ever will go kayaking again. But if I do, you’re the partner I need no matter what for the rest of forever. Josie, will you marry me?”
She knelt in the sand in front of him and cradled his face in her fingers, then pulled his lips into hers.
“Is this a yes?”
“Yes, yes, yes.” She took the ring box from him and pulled out the sparkling diamond. Luke grasped it from her and slid it on her finger. “As long as you weren’t suggesting we should get married in a kayak.”
“Absolutely not.” Luke’s nose wrinkled.
“It wouldn’t be so bad. We made peace with the sharks at the aquarium, remember?”
“Those were the nice ones. They were well fed and not looking for a bite.”
“What if we get married on a sailboat?”
“That we can do.” Luke kissed her again, his heart banging in his chest as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Even as he wasn’t sure how things could get any better, they did.
