by Andrew Wareham

Lord Alton was granted the privilege of informing Frederick of his great good fortune.

“The Grant-in-Aid will be made by means of a very quiet transfer of funds by the Treasury, Sir Frederick. The Bath must be awarded publicly – ideally while you are still pale in the face and clearly still much under the weather. A levee would be the ideal for our purposes, and very soon, prior to the official ceremony, that is. His Majesty is still capable of public appearances, though perhaps not for too much longer, poor gentleman! Could you face an hour next week, Sir Frederick? What say you, Lady Harris?”

Elisabeth was aware of the desirability of the public conferment of the Honour, thought that her husband could survive the strain.

“The sole question is whether his tailor can perform, sir.”

“Scott? Send your man to him, Sir Frederick. He will never let you down.”

Frederick spoke to his valet immediately after Lord Alton had left.

“A levee, sir? The award of the Bath? On Tuesday next, that would be. Of course, sir. I shall take myself to Scott immediately.”

  “Thank you, Plowman.”

The valet, tall, rake-thin, slightly stooped as befitted a menial in his own opinion, precisely dressed in black and spotless white, scurried off to address Frederick’s cutter at Scott. The price of ceremonial dress, by no means dagger-cheap, rose by another twenty guineas; it would be delivered on Monday.

“Your master is still incommoded by his wound, is he not, Mr Plowman?”

“Less than I could have imagined, Mr Potter. He is a very strong man, in his head more than his body, I shall admit, just at the moment. He is also a very fine gentleman, and one who will still make a great mark on our world. We shall hear much more of Sir Frederick.”

Innocents at War Series: The Royal Flying Corps grew from the amateur hobbyists flying the earliest and most dangerous machines. Mostly drawn from the Army and Navy, the pilots regarded themselves as gentlemen members of a new club. The Great War saw the death of amateurism - except in the higher ranks - and the unplanned, fortuitous creation of a professional force.

Innocents at War follows the career of Anglo-American flier, Tommy Stark, an enthusiastic boy forced to grow up quickly as many around him die. His deep affection for squire’s daughter, Grace is his only certainty as the bitter conflict threatens to strip the world of its innocence.
