“Gawain is coming… here?”
“He already is,” Eve said simply, rising to her feet.
Gwen got to her feet and promptly collapsed back on the bench; her legs would not hold her as her limbs trembled with shock, overcome with emotion.
Out of the shadows, a man stepped forward. He was wearing slacks, a sweater, and looked a little out of place. Those long locks that she’d always thought were a little shaggy, looked too incredibly perfect at this moment. Warm grey eyes met hers and she saw that his expression mirrored hers.
“My lady wife?” he breathed, stepping forward and kneeling beside the bench. Gwen couldn’t help the tears that fell as she reached for him, pulling him into her arms and hugging him tightly.
“Gawain! I’ve missed you,” she breathed, hiccupping at the tears that fell freely, choking her. “I am never letting you out of my sight again.”
“Where is this place?”
“You are in Atlanta – on the other side of the ocean.”
“This is your land?”
“We have so much to talk about and so much to catch up on,” she laughed thickly, smiling, as she saw his eyes were glassy with unshed tears. He kissed the palms of her hands tenderly, before placing them on either side of his jaw.
“We’ve much lost time to make up for, love.”
Gwen hesitated and froze, looking at Eve.
“How long do I have with him?”
She could feel herself on the edge of crumbling. If she lost Gawain again, there might be no recovery. She could not say goodbye to this man. He was as essential as the air she breathed.
“I believe you have sixty-three years,” Eve said gently with a smile. “Meet Mr. Gawain Green, local historian that specializes in early European history. Mr. Green – here is your briefcase.”
Eve handed over a small thin case with a smile. Confused, Gawain and Gwen looked at each other before accepting the handle. Eve snapped her fingers and Gawain froze for a moment before relaxing again. He grinned and popped open the latches on the case easily, like he’d done it all his life. Inside the case were several pieces of paper. A master’s degree, driver’s license, marriage license, and keys.
“Thank you,” Gawain said appreciatively, looking up at Eve from where he knelt beside Gwen.
“Thank you for what?”
“She just gave us everything we’re gonna need.”
“What do you mean?”
“We’ve got a fresh start here,” Gawain said easily and Gwen realized that his speech was different. The accent she loved was still there, but he was using contractions now and using slang. He’d never used the term ‘gonna’ in the past.
“Did you zap my man’s brain?” Gwen asked bluntly, looking at Eve and seeing the happy look on the woman’s expression. Gawain got to his feet and clasped her hand in his, tugging at her to join him. Gwen rose and immediately hugged the woman.
“Thank you,” Gwen whispered gratefully.
“I just put your puzzle piece back into the box it should have been in all along. You were always meant to be with him, and now you’ll have that chance. Now, run along. Duty calls - and the princess is in another castle…” Eve said happily, waving.
Unbelievably, she walked directly towards a painting of Ophelia by Waterhouse and stepped into the frame, disappearing into the scene as if this was a normal everyday occurrence.
Gwen looked at Gawain, who looked just as flabbergasted as she felt. The woman had been a whirlwind of magical moments, some good and some bad, ever since she’d appeared in the garden center. Nothing would ever prepare her for another appearance – and truthfully – part of her hoped to never see Eve again. It was too traumatic. She needed a little peace and a chance to reunite with her soulmate.
“Let’s go home,” Gawain urged, giving Gwen a hot look that shot lava through her veins as she remembered their shared moments together. They would never be apart again and the future held such promise.
