Julie felt her cheeks heat once again, recalling how they’d spent some very nice afternoons by the creek. “I think they might enjoy a picnic lunch.”
“Of course they would, my love, and if not, then Mrs. Williams can watch them for an hour or so while we do.”
“As a housekeeper, Mrs. Williams is impeccable. She is wonderful with Jason and Michelle. How did you get so lucky?”
“It helps that her husband is my foreman.”
“True.” Julie paused for a few seconds. “Angie told me your mother has been talking about watching the twins for us.” She could see him stiffen at her words. “I see she has spoken to you about this already.”
Jim met her eyes for a moment only, and then he looked away. “Uhm, actually she and my dad both have brought the subject up a few times.”
“I see.” Julie watched Jim and could see that he was feeling guilty for not discussing this sooner. She had known the time would come when Phyllis asked, but she had been surprised the topic hadn’t come up before now.
After their wedding day, it had taken some time for things to ease between Phyllis and Julie. She had not harbored any ill feelings toward her mother-in-law. It was due to Jim and his father’s influence that caused Phyllis to let loose of the old feelings. They had started with a weekly dinner, with both Julie and Angie attending. The first few times had been a little rocky, and Tony had actually grabbed his wife around the waist and covered her mouth when she nearly let fly her response to a biting and thoughtless comment made by Phyllis.
Julie was actually ready to let Phyllis and Rob watch the babies. A few hours in the afternoon would work out quite well. She smiled at Jim.
“All right, husband, I’m ready to make the royal presentation if you are.” Julie stood and passed Michelle into her father’s free arm. Quickly she restored her new dress to order. “How do I look?”
“Perfect, Julie. Do we need to take some diapers and stuff down with us?” Jim asked as he watched Julie.
“No, Mrs. Williams has already prepared a bag with everything the babies might require and will bring it over once we get the babies settled. All right, I’ll take Michelle back and you can carry Jason.” Julie started walking toward the door when Jim reached out to stop her. “Is something wrong?”
For a few seconds Jim didn’t answer and Julie wondered if something was bothering him. But then he smiled, which slowly turned into a devilish grin.
“No, Julie, because the truth is that my life was complete the day you married me. And I thought to myself that I was luckiest man in the world. Then you gave me not one, but two children. That’s when I realized that no matter how tired you or I were, every single day is better than yesterday. With you in my life, and now our children, I have everything I need. I thank God for banging our heads together until we finally caught on and realized that we were meant for one another.”
Julie nodded, feeling the tears closing off her throat. Her voice was hoarse as she replied, “I love you.”
“I know, darling. I love you more than I would have thought possible. Now, before I change mind about skipping out on this shindig, Mrs. Morgan, let’s go present the newest members of the Bradley-Morgan clan!”
Julie nodded, and then added with a wink and smile, “I think I’ll ask your mother to watch the babies tomorrow. Maybe we could slip away for a nice picnic.”
Jim grinned back. “I’ll have Mrs. Williams pack us a lunch and we might make time to eat as well.”
Julie giggled, nodding her head. When both babies made a gurgling noise and smiled, their parents just smiled and felt proud to have two such smart children!
