17 In fact, the radio waves transmitted from the Eiffel Tower and other early 19th century stations had little difficulty in propagating through the upper atmosphere and hardly any extending thereafter into interplanetary space; their range was much more limited near ground level because of atmospheric absorption and the proximity of the horizon.
18 This adjustment demonstrates that La Hire has discovered the arithmetical error he made in Chapter I of Part One, or had it pointed out to him, but he is still refusing to take the relative motion of the two planets into account.
19 Unlike Camille Flammarion, Maurice Reclus (1883-1972) was only at the beginning of his career in 1911, when he worked in the office of the Sous-secrétaire d’Etat des Beaux Arts [Undersecretary of State for the Fine Arts] rather than the President’s office. He went on to become a highly accomplished political historian and biographer, ultimately becoming President of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques. The fulsome praise heaped upon his fictitious equivalent here, and the role the character plays within the story, suggest that La Hire knew Reclus personally, and probably owed him a favor.
