For the next few hours, we tried to wait out the fires. But even once we were able to get closer, the chunks of rubble proved too much for us to do anything when it came to clearing them.
There was a long meeting, and in the end, many of the soldiers that opted to stay behind and man their post for whatever reason agreed that they would post sentries for the next several days around the decimated building. They vowed to shoot to kill anything that might emerge.
I very reluctantly agreed to return with my people back to our compound that would now benefit from a few dozen military personnel that no longer felt the need to man the guard depot. We also came away with a variety of weapons ranging from assault rifles to a few mortars and grenade launchers.
We returned home in one of the school buses with about ten thousand rounds of ammunition for the .50 cal mounted on top. The trip was almost boring. Still, I could not relax. Maybe I was simply disappointed that I had not been able to put a bullet in the man’s head.
For the next several days, I had a nightmare that was similar to the ending of Carrie. I was standing at that pile of rubble when a gnarled and charred hand would shoot out and grab me. I always woke to Alex telling me that everything was okay.
Three weeks later, our tower sentry called out that a jeep was approaching. I came out with a few people to greet them. It was a woman from the depot.

TW Brown is the author of the Zomblog series, his horror comedy romp, That Ghoul Ava, and, of course, the DEAD series and the New DEAD series. Safely tucked away in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, he moves away from his desk only at the urging of his Frisbee catching Border Collie Tyrion, or one of his Newfoundlands, Freyja or her younger sister Loki.
He plays a little guitar on the side...just for fun...and makes up any excuse to either go check on his beehives or strolling along his favorite place...Cannon Beach. His hobbies include training his Newfoundlands to be show dogs working on their championships, water rescue working on their WD titles and draft carts working on their DD titles. And we should never forget to add his African Greys named Sheldon, Lisa, and Paul. He answers all his emails sent to [email protected] and tries to thank everybody personally when they take the time to leave a review of one of his works.
