It was hard to say goodbye to Poke Rescue and EMS. They had thrown me a going away party, complete with a case of Sarah Fritz’s Double Dutch chocolate cupcakes. Tex nearly had tears in his eyes when he told me, “We’ll miss you, Butterpat. Don’t be a stranger.”
Cherry hugged me tight. “We’ll still see plenty of each other. You aren’t getting rid of me that easy, girl. Make sure you come back and see us and let us know how things are going up at the Clinton Hospital. I’m so jealous—you might end up seeing Ryder more than me, during the day!”
I highly doubted that. Since Ryder’s mysterious appearance, he and Cherry had been spending every spare second they had together. I just hoped she didn’t take his focus too far from his work—Ryder was only months away from completing his life-long dream of being a doctor.
Jake had been supportive of my new full-time job as an EMT for the hospital, though it meant less time for us to be together. He promised to take some cooking lessons, so he didn’t burn the house down the nights I’d be working and he’d be left to fend for himself. My guess was he’d end up taking up residency at Ray’s table to partake in my brother’s good home cooking instead.
I had woken up an hour early this morning, hadn’t even taken a bite of my toast, then proudly put on my crisp new navy-blue uniform. Leaving my uneaten breakfast on the counter, I had climbed into my car with plenty of time to spare for the long drive. Taking a deep breath, I drove down to the Clinton Hospital for my very first day at my new job. A happy smiled spread across my face. It seemed like everyone’s dreams were coming true these days. Especially mine.
