by Danuta Reah
Night came later here, but the land was already in shadow as she walked back along the path towards her car. She must have missed her way somehow, because she didn’t pass the stone building again, with the old woman and the dog. Her car was a silhouette on the road when she reached it. She put the empty urn on the seat and turned back for a last look at the sea. Then she drove south towards the light, leaving the shadow-lands behind her.
Acknowledgments
With many thanks to the people who helped me when I was writing this book. I would particularly like to thank Superintendent Steve Hicks for his advice about police procedure; Professor Malcolm Coulthard for his advice about forensic linguistics; Dr Peter French for his advice about forensic phonology; and to those people who gave me information about the lives of refugees and asylum seekers.
I would also like to thank the people who read this manuscript for me while I was working on it, particularly Sue and Penny, the e-mail writers’ group; Teresa for her advice, support and encouragement; Julia for her editorial advice, and Anne.
