Kate’s Dilemma (Kate's Case Files Book 3) Page 14

Patrick looked between the picture of the scientist that appeared to be in his fifties and the very young looking girl with brown hair.

“That is right, Sally,” Steven took over. “Officials are still investigating the disappearance and will be giving a statement shortly. No foul play is suspected. While no official information has been released, it is assumed that Hargrave and Fitzgerald went away together, leaving on Fitzgerald’s private jet.”

“There is our starting point,” Thomas said. Patrick and all the others turned toward him.

“I don’t get it,” Kate said.

“That makes two of us,” Patrick added. “While I find it incredibly sad at the state of a country where professors and students run away together or even had romantic relationships, it’s hardly an FBI case.”

Thomas let out a sigh. “You would be right in normal circumstances, but Samantha Hardgrave happens to be the daughter of Senator Hardgrave. She also happens to be two months shy of her eighteenth birthday. Therefore she is technically still a minor. The plane filed a flight plane to go to Arizona although it did not arrive at its intended destination.”

“Which means that there is every reason to think they may have crossed state lines,” Patrick said.

“Which means, technically, this could be considered an FBI case,” Brain said.

“Which is why the senator was able to get us on the job. He has heard about our team and requested us. We are all heading the airport, but we have a new assignment. Patrick, you and I are heading to Washington D.C. to speak with the Senator, his wife, and other people that Samantha knows. She graduated early from a private school in DC. Kim, Logan, and Kate, You get to be a team like Charlies Angles. The three of you are headed for Ashland. Brian, I’m sending you to California, that is where Professor Fitzgerald is from.”

Patrick shook his head and took a step forward. “I don’t see why we are even doing this. It is very clear what has happened. The girl is old enough to know what she was getting into it. She made a stupid decision, but this isn’t truly a criminal case.”

Thomas crossed his arms and looked around the room. “I’m going to say this here, and then we are done with it. We all can see what’s going on and that the Senator is overstepping his bounds. We also may have personal feelings on this case. I don’t know one of you that doesn’t have a strong opinion on this topic. However, we are a top-rated team. We didn’t get that way by bringing our personal opinions into each job. Our job is to find these two and bring them back. Whatever happens to Professor Fitzgerald is up to the courts, not us. Also, we had better act like we are treating this as serious kidnapping, whatever our personal opinions. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes, sir,” Patrick said, folding his hands behind his back. He already hated this case. He was off to drag two stupid lovers back to a horde of angry people, eager to make an example out of the professor and a victim out of the girl. He would do his job, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. Besides, he would be spending a lot of one on one time with Thomas. Not exactly his idea of fun.

“Okay, you are already packed, planes are waiting for us at the airport. Let’s go.”

Patrick grabbed his jacket and exchanged a look with Kate. She didn’t look too happy about this case either. So much for a fun time in Maine.
