  Chapter Eleven

“Alicia,” she heard Jane’s voice calling her. “Alicia, James is here to see you!”

Alicia, who had been dozing off, sat up straight. “Send him in!” she yelled back.

“You better go in before Clarabelle or Paige come down and make everything extremely awkward,” Jane suggested to James.

James nodded as he knocked on Alicia’s door and was let in almost immediately by her ‘come in.' She was lying on her bed and gestured him to come and join her which he did, sitting next to her. Their hands entwined as they sat in silence at first.

  “I spoke to Clarabelle.”

Alicia waited for him to speak.

“I only spoke to her about how I can never be true to her in a relationship because I’m still in love with you.”

  “Oh.”

“I was never planning on getting back with her, to begin with.”

  “Did she want to?”

“No, she didn’t. She kept telling me not to make a stupid mistake this time and to go back to you. I told her I only came to her because you asked.”

“Where does that leave us then?”

  “It’s up to us now.”

“I want to be with you.”

“I want to be with you too.”

“Well, I guess we want the same thing then. That’s a first in itself.”

  James laughed.

“Will you be my girlfriend then?”

“I thought that goes without saying.”

“Please don’t ruin the moment. I want it to… go with saying.”

“Right, okay. Yes. I’ll be your girlfriend.”

They looked into each other’s eyes before James bent forward to kiss her. Alicia, still lying on the bed, pulled him closer and used the support to lift herself up and onto his lap. Still kissing him, she sat on his lap, draping each of her legs around his.

“I can finally kiss you without feeling guilty,” she said between kisses.

“I’ve never felt guilty kissing you. It was as if this was meant to be and any other hindrance in the middle was just a push towards this moment.”

  “You’re sweet,” she said.

His fingers lightly ran up her bare legs, sending shivers up her spine. His touch was so light yet electric. His lips traced the side of her jaw and her neck. A moan escaped her lips as he trailed down to her chest and kissed the part of her breasts visible through her low-necked t-shirt. Her hands reached towards his hair; her fists closed around them.

“James,” she said softly. “I love you so much.”

He pulled away and looked up at her. “I love you more,” he replied easily. She touched his face, tracing the outlines his jaw. Leaning forward, she brought her lips to his again, not kissing him but brushing them gently. They stayed like that, lips and noses brushing, the two of them smiling. They exchanged soft kisses. And then they were kissing passionately, and he pushed his tongue into her mouth. His hands traveled to her legs again; she was only wearing a t-shirt and no pajamas. He caressed her inner thighs, making her impatient with anticipation. He broke the kiss again and let his lips trail to her neck. He was making her go crazy with his slow and seductive moves, never entirely giving her what she wanted, resisting the whole way. He pulled up her shirt, removing it effortlessly. His hands trailed to her bra and unhooked it. Pulling it down, he brushed his lips over her erect nipples. His hands were back at her inner thigh, and she felt him hook her panty to the side. Her breath hitched, and she found myself clinging to the front of his shirt which was now unbuttoned. She was still seated on his lap. He stroked her, feeling how wet she was. Parting her walls, he gently pushed a finger inside, and she whimpered his name. Moans kept escaping her lips as he pumped in and out, adding a second finger once she became comfortable. He lifted her up easily, adjusting their positions so that she was still sitting on top of him but facing away from his body now. His fingers continued to work as he shifted his hips, grinding his hardened erection into her from the back. She whimpered helplessly at the overwhelming pleasure that washed through her. Her body was limp by now, and her head was leaning against his shoulder. Her lips were parted, releasing gasps and cries as he continued to grind into her, his fingers pumping in and out. She cried out in passionate pleasure as she finished and he withdrew his hand. His hardened erection still pushed into her as she still sat on his lap, her legs spread wide. He raised his hips slightly, his hands squeezing her breasts. His erection pressed into her, and she moaned.

“P-please,” she stammered. “Don’t torture me.”

He complied, lifting me up and setting her down next to him. He then proceeded to push her on the bed and undress.

“Please hurry,” she whimpered. He positioned himself at her entrance and started to push inside. She distinctly registered hearing Jane’s voice from the living room talking to someone. She couldn’t hear the other person. James pulled her arms up, holding them above her head as he stayed stationary inside her. She lifted her hips up. Why was he doing this to her?

She groaned in frustration. “Are you trying to make me beg?”

She could tell it was becoming harder for him to stay still.

“What do you want me to do?” he asked seductively.

  “Go faster, please. Be rougher.”

He withdrew and thrust back inside. His pace slowly increased until Alicia was moaning. He kissed her to muffle her moans so the other would not hear. Her hands were still held above her, making it virtually impossible for her to find a release to the tremors of pleasure in her body. She wrapped her legs around his torso, the only possible release she could think of. He let go of her arms and lifted her hips up to meet his heavy thrusts. Her hands closed around the bed covers, and her breathing increased steadily as she came closer.

She cried with pleasure when she orgasmed, not caring who would hear. His brain distantly registered that the voices outside paused as she cried loudly. She did not care.

He collapsed on top of her, and they both lay, breathing hard. Sheens of sweat covered their naked bodies. He pushed her away from her face. Her eyes were still closed, a content smile playing on her face. She still hadn’t recovered from the little episode.

He made to roll off her, but she held him there. “Don’t move,” she said.

“I’ll crush you,” he said, laughing.

“You won’t.” Her arms wrapped around his neck, holding him in place. They shared small kisses, on the lips, cheeks, nose.

“Can we just stay like this forever?” she asked.

  “Fine with me,” he said.

“James,” she said as a thought occurred to her. “Why did you stop pursuing me initially?”

“Because I thought it was never going to happen between us. Liam suggested it, actually.”

  “Liam?”

“We had a very drunk conversation about you a year ago. He was brutally honest. Told me I’m an idiot to be pursuing a hopeless case. I didn’t have any defense. He said I should try being just friends with you and I should see other girls. I mean, I was already seeing girls, and loads of them. He thought I should settle with one of them because that’ll make it easier to move on from you rather than taking along a string of one night stands and flings. I didn’t follow all his advice. I mean, I became friends with you, like he suggested but I didn’t settle down until I met Clarabelle. And Liam was furious when I settled for her.”

  “Why?” Alicia asked curiously.

“He said that you were finally beginning to warm up to me and suddenly, I jumped into bed with Clarabelle.” He laughed at that.

“I’m sorry for all the times I turned you down so brutally,” Alicia said, touching his cheek.

“No, I deserved it. I was an arrogant bastard, thinking I’m entitled to any woman who I want. You showed me how wrong I was. You were always a blow to my ego.”

“You were always a lift to my ego,” Alicia replied laughing. “You flattered me too much. I secretly used to look forward to it ev
en though I would never admit it to myself.”

  “Look forward to my flattery?”

“Yeah. Your flattery. Our conversations and arguments. They were all very exciting in a way.”

  “I thought you hated them.”

“I did hate them. But let’s put it this way… if one day, you randomly stopped flattering me or we never had any arguments, I would have been disappointed.”

“Were you disappointed when I stopped flattering you then?”

“No, because I was too intrigued when I realized you were a normal person and we could have normal conversations without arguing and insulting one another.”

When they exited the room some half an hour later, Clarabelle was sitting in the living room with Jane. She seemed surprised to see James. Jane shook her head in Alicia’s direction as if to say, “I tried to make her leave.”

Alicia felt awkward, but James seemed completely calm. “Hi, Clarabelle,” he said.

“James,” she greeted. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Just came a couple of hours back.”

  “I see.”

Paige appeared at the bottom of the stairs too.

“Oh, hey,” she said sheepishly as she saw the unexpected crowd that welcomed her.

They were all silent for a few minutes before Jane spoke up. “Well, this isn’t awkward at all, is it?”

  “It isn’t,” James said shrugging.

“Where are you two headed?” Jane asked the girls.

“I’m going to the movies with the girls,” Paige replied.

“I have a date,” Clarabelle said.

“That’s… nice.” Jane was clearly running out of things to say to keep the conversation friendly.

James saved her the trouble. “Well, we’re going out then. See you around.” He draped a casual arm around Alicia and led her out.

  “That was smooth,” she commented.

“You need to stop feeling awkward around Clarabelle if you’re going to be my girlfriend now.”

  “I know,” she sighed.

They drove on top of the hill where they had spent several days of the previous year chatting and getting to know each other. It seemed like the perfect place for them to be now. The sun was setting, and there was a light breeze playing. They sat on top of the highest boulder on the hill which had a kind of cave carved into it. Watching the sunset, she rested her head on his shoulder, and they looked on.

  Chapter One: Move-in Day

Alex slammed the trunk of her car shut. She had already made two trips from the parking lot to her dorm room on the second floor. She grabbed the sleeve of her t-shirt and wiped the sweat from her forehead. The heat was almost unbearable, and the humidity made it hard to breathe. Alex took the hair tie from her wrist and bent her head forward. The hair on the back of her neck was drenched. A light breeze cooled the sweat on her shoulders as she wrapped her long, blonde hair into a ponytail. Alex flipped her head backward, and her hair arched towards the sky before landing on her back. Ok, last trip.

Wedging her laundry hamper between her arm and her hip, Alex made her way across the parking lot. Heat waves rippled up from the pavement. Her flip-flops smacked into her heels with each step. As she walked, she saw a guy leaned up against a tree. He was wearing a black shirt and faded jeans. His hair was dark and slightly curly. Alex stumbled as she missed the first step up to the dorm entrance. Her flip-flop ripped, and the plastic toe piece broke free from the foam bottom.

Alex’s hamper flew from her hand, and clothing scattered around her. She picked herself up from the concrete and dusted herself off. She held up her shoe. Great. With a groan of frustration, she started grabbing her laundry from the sidewalk and the steps. She stuffed the clothing haphazardly back into the plastic hamper.

“Need a hand?” Alex looked up to see the guy from the tree standing beside her. One of her bras was hanging from his fingertips. He smiled cockily at her.

Alex’s face turned red. She jerked her bra away from him. “I’ve got it. Thanks.” She buried the bra under a pile of tank tops and hobbled up the steps. It wasn’t even one of her cute bras. Ugh! Why couldn’t he have picked up the pink, lacy one? This year was already off to a fabulous start. Alex rolled her eyes as she entered the air-conditioning. Her cheeks still burned with embarrassment.

She made her way down the hall to her dorm room. Doors lined the hallway in an offset pattern. Handmade welcome signs were taped to the doors with names listed to help students find their rooms. Alex’s name was posted on the last room on the right. At least she wasn’t on the third floor. Alex watched as a family struggled to carry a small loveseat up the stairs. She wiggled her key into the lock and threw the door open. There was a dark-haired girl shoving a bin of snacks under the desk by the far wall.

“Oh, hey!” The girl stood up and put her hands on her hips, “You must be Alex. I’m Tish. Nice to meet ya!” The girl held out her hand.

Alex set down her hamper and wiped the sweat off of her palm before shaking the girl’s hand, “Same.”

“This is the last of it.” An older man with graying hair said as he wheeled in a mini fridge.

“Sweet! Thanks, Dad!” Tish bounced over to him and gave him a hug. “Where’s Mom?

“Taking pictures of some squirrels outside.” He jerked his head towards the window.

“Mmkay. Hey, Al, I’m gonna go say goodbye, then I’ll be back to finish unpacking.” Tish waved as she and her dad headed out to the hallway, leaving a pile of bags in the middle of the room.

Alex kicked off the shoe she still had on and dropped the broken flip-flop on the ground. It smacked against the tile floor. She opened one of the drawers on her dresser and started shoving clothing in it. Her dorm room had a large mirror with two sinks wedged between twin closets. There were two lofted beds, one on each side of the room. Under the beds, both she and Tish had a desk, dresser, nightstand, and a chair. Alex examined the faded red upholstery on her chair. There was a black mystery stain on the edge of the seat. She glanced at Tish’s chair. No mystery stain there. Alex shot a furtive glance at the door before lugging her chair over to Tish’s desk. She swapped the chairs and skidded the stain free one back to her side of the dorm. As the lock clicked open, Alex quickly sat down on her newly requisitioned chair, trying not to look guilty.

“Okie dokie! I’m back.” Tish smiled as she started to unpack her things. She scooted her chair back, paused for a moment looking at the seat, then shrugged her shoulders. “So, where ya from?” Tish peered over her shoulder while she draped a feather boa around her bed post.

“Texas. You?” Alex pulled her fitted sheet out of the hamper and climbed up the end of her lofted bed until she was at the foot of the mattress. The wood rungs were at awkward intervals, making climbing and balancing difficult.

“Colorado. It’s crazy how hot it is here!” Tish said incredulously. Alex smiled as she tossed a fleeting gaze over to Tish. Her roomm
ate was balanced precariously on top of her nightstand while she tossed a bright orange comforter over her bed.

“Knock, knock!” An older blonde girl was standing in the open doorway. “Time for student I.D. pictures!” She stood off to the side and waited while Alex and Tish climbed down from their perches to join her in the hallway. Alex rummaged around quickly for a pair of flats. She slipped them on and joined the other two in the hall. Other freshmen were already filing past. “I’m Emily, your Resident Assistant. My room is on the second floor if you need anything.” She gestured to the stairwell as she guided them to the door that led out the back of the dorm. “Just follow the crowd to the Nathaniel Building. You’ll get your I.D.’s there.” Emily smiled warmly and went back to rounding up other freshmen.

“This sucks.” Alex ran her fingers through her sweat soaked ponytail. Her clothes were sticking to her, and her thighs were starting to get heat rash.

“Well, at least we’re all sweaty and nasty.” Tish walked along beside her, holding her arms away from her body. Beads of perspiration were already running down her forehead. The two of them giggled as they mingled in the sultry crowd.

Off to the side in a sitting area with trees, Alex saw the dark haired boy from earlier. He was sitting in a metal chair with his boots propped up on a wire, mesh table in front of him. There was a girl with a pixie cut sitting next to him. Her tank top was low cut, and she was leaning forward seductively. He was staring off into the distance across from him while she tried to carry on a conversation. The girl saw Alex looking at them, and her face contorted in disgust. The guy turned to see what his companion was glaring at. When his eyes landed on Alex, his lips curved into a crooked smirk. Alex jerked her head back to the front and made it a point not to glance in their direction again.

“Guess this is where we’re heading.” Tish nodded to the building up ahead. There was a line of assorted freshmen zig-zagging out the door. Tish and Alex joined the end of the line. The grass by the edge of the sidewalk waved in the slight breeze. The shadow of the Nathaniel building offered some relief from the afternoon sun. White columns stretched up from the concrete porch. The building was constructed of brick in multiple shades of red ranging from dark muddy brown to sun-bleached pink. The line moved fairly quickly. Alex stepped across the threshold, squinting in the sudden lack of sunlight.
