Valonis: The Ancient Blood Awakens: (A War of Blood and Scales Romance) Page 16

Rachel looked over the objects she was about to put into her bag, double checking them with the well detailed list of supplies she would need for her first day back to school. Books? Check. Notepads? Check. Fully charged brand new MacBook Air? Check. Pens, pencils, tiny first aid kit, and money to eat lunch on campus? Check.

Everything is ready, she thought, excitement coursing through her veins. After eight weeks of waiting, she was finally getting back to school again! She checked the list one more time, and then put everything in its proper place in her bag. Lastly, she slipped in the keys to her brand new dark blue BMW X3 into the front pouch of her bag. An unnecessary purchase in her opinion, but Valonis had insisted.

To her surprise, Valonis had taken care of possibly anything they might have needed. When they had crossed into the temporary portal the Earl had opened for them, Rachel had been in awe of how big the house in the picture actually was. Since the photo had been taken, someone had come and paved a driveway from the house to the main road. A koi pond had been put in the front yard, and a large, sprawling back porch had been added to the house. Inside she had found everything she could have needed, including her favorite shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste. The only thing she found she needed to buy was makeup and human clothes.

Druscilla had, to Rachel’s amazement, saved most of her things and had even paid for them to be kept in a storage unit for if she ever returned. The little goth had cried and ran into Rachel’s arms when she finally saw that she was safe, and it amazed Rachel again at how much she had cared for her. It was a tad difficult trying to explain where she was, but to her surprise, Druscilla wasn’t hard to be convinced that she had gone on a ‘soul searching’ journey.

Although, Rachel supposed, it wasn’t that untrue. After all she had learned a lot about herself, especially how strong she could be. When she looked through her old human clothes, she didn’t see herself in them anymore. She was no longer a fan of the muted colors or long sleeves. She had found pride in her body in dragon fashion, and decided to just donate everything that had been saved to charity. Besides, she wanted to shop not just for her new self, but for Walter as well. Human baby clothes had gotten so cute! But then, she had never actually looked at them before either. She had thought babies always needed new supplies, but that was until she saw the in inventory Valonis had already bought.

In Walter’s room she had balked at the amount of supplies Valonis had purchased. It was as if he had bought the inventory of a newborn store and had someone organize it and put it away in cute storage bins in the baby’s room.

The library had made her cry. It was only a quarter of the way full so far and she very much looked forward to the endless hours she would spend perusing through bookstores to find the right volumes to fill it. In the last two months that they had returned to the human world, Rachel spent an enormous amount of time in the library. It was where she loved to nurse Walter, loved to read, and to her delight, where she loved to make love to Valonis the most. It was by far her favorite room, with its tall, vast bookshelves, comfy couches and chaises, and a huge marble fireplace that was incredibly easy to turn on.

And then there was the kitchen. She hadn’t discovered her passion for cooking until she and Valonis had moved out of the palace, but she had fallen in love with the complexity of it. The more complicated the dish was to make the happier she became to make it. With the fully furnished kitchen that Valonis had given her, there was no end to the delicious treats she could make. He had thought of everything she could have ever wanted, and gave it to her.

She looked over to him as he fed Walter his breakfast bottle, and love practically melted her to the spot. He had changed so much since they had first met. From brooding, spoiled royal player to responsible, loving father and husband in the span of one year was no easy feat for anyone. Some of his dominating personality traits still came out from time to time, but she didn’t mind those. Especially, she thought with a blush, in the bedroom. When Valonis looked up and caught her looking at him she almost spilled her coffee, and hurriedly pretended to be doing something important.

“What are you doing over there?” He asked, giving her a knowing grin.

“Just getting ready!” She chirped, hiding her blush with her coffee cup. “What about you? What do you have planned for the day?”

Valonis let Walter finish his bottle and positioned him over his burp cloth so he could start patting his back.

“I actually have a full day today,” he replied. “Walter and I are going to meet with a few human scientists who’ve been collecting research on dragon and human mating possibilities. I haven’t confirmed it yet, but it looks as if human males may even be able to impregnate our females.”

“Really?” Rachel asked, surprised. It had been shared with her that so far it seemed reproduction would only be possible if a dragon male would mate with the correct human female. If the opposite was also possible, it meant that there was a real chance in furthering the survival of the dragon shifter species.

“That’s really exciting, love,” she said with a genuine smile. “Are you sure you don’t want me to take Walter to class with me? I really wouldn’t mind.” She leaned down and kissed her son on the forehead. Then, with a touch of baby talk added, “He’s the most well behaved baby in the world, isn’t he sweetheart?”

Walter cooed and smiled up at his parents as he continued his breakfast. He really was a happy baby, and a healthy one at that. He had started sleeping entirely through the night before they had even moved to the human world, which had been a blessing in itself.

Valonis chuckled, and promised Rachel that it was more than all right that their son come with him. He smiled with his wife as they both stared down at their beautiful son. Then, as if he was thinking of all that Rachel had gone through, his face grew somber as he turned his gaze back to her. In his eyes poured his love for her and his son, and again Rachel felt that melting sensation.

“It’s funny,” he wondered, his tone holding just a hint of humor. “It’s as if the two species need each other to survive.”

She smiled, put her coffee down, and walked over to her husband so she could sit on his lap. With one hand on his shoulder and other over his hand holding their son, she looked him in the eyes and smiled at him with all the love she had.

“I think I know what you mean.”

  The couple smiled, and kissed.
