  A Note About The Author

  Introduction

Kyle, Jenny, and Paul are back with a goal to make things right again. In the previous story, Kyle went against Jenny’s plan which ultimately led George, a spy who helped them prepare for the Lola High Junior Spy School’s challenge, get transformed into a kid. Kyle’s first role as a leader went wrong because of his novice mistake, but he vowed to make things right again with the support of his friends. When it was announced that their class would be competing with each other to change George back and the prize was a promotion, Kyle knew then that he’d help his team get the promotion. Big Larry however wasn’t trying to let that happened and tried to intimidate and sabotage Kyle’s plans. Will Big Larry best Kyle and his group, or will Kyle fight for what he truly believed belonged to them? “Competing for the Promotion”, shows that sticking together even when things are tough can ultimately help solve problems quicker and more efficiently.

  Chapter One

“You know, there has to be an easy way to figure out how to turn George back into an adult.” Paul said as he, Kyle, and Jenny walked around the small playground around the corner from Jenny’s house. It was Sunday and it had been two weeks since they had the challenge with Lola Spy Junior High.

It had also been two weeks since George, a spy who helped Kyle, Jenny, Paul, and the rest of their class train for the challenge, got transformed into a kid. Kyle really beat himself up about George’s unfortunate transformation because it was his fault. He had allowed a Lola student to trick him into believing that she needed help. She was lying, and took the high-tech wrist watch that Paul made for him and ran off with it. In the spur of the moment, she shot the watch at George when he had come out of nowhere.

“This shouldn’t have even happened.” Jenny pouted. Jenny had been mad at Kyle because he deliberately chose not to follow her warning. Kyle turned away from Jenny. He felt bad enough already. Jenny should give him some credit; Kyle was the one who suggested that they meet up on the weekends to try to figure out a solution.

“I said I was sorry,” Kyle mumbled. Paul wasn’t mad at Kyle at all, he was just mad that the Lola girl got ahold of his invention. “Mistakes…. happen.” Kyle said lamely. His first task as a leader had failed horribly and he could tell that his friends were regretting making that decision even though they didn’t come right out and say it.

“It’s okay Kyle,” Paul said and grinned. “If it was a major problem, we all would have been expelled by now.” Kyle knew that Paul was just trying to make him feel better, but he thought that Paul was going about it in a horrible way. Jenny just folded her arms and pouted some more.

  ,

“So, can you build something to reverse it?” Jenny finally asked, looking over at Paul. Kyle looked over at Paul waiting for his answer. Paul scratched his head.

“I probably could, but I don’t even know how I made the watches have that ability.” Jenny threw her hands in the air.

“The creator has no idea of how he created his creation.” Jenny blew out a puff of air. Kyle thought about that for a moment.

“Do you still have the watches?” Jenny had given hers back to Paul after she found out it could change people. Paul shook his head.

“My mom made me destroy them. I was sad too.” He said with a crease coming across his forehead. “I worked really hard on it and it was probably one of my best inventions.” Paul sighed in a dramatic way and started sniffling like he was going to cry.

“Do you still know how to make it?” Kyle pushed on. Paul nodded his head. “Can you… I don’t know, remake it and analyze it for all of the abilities it has?” Paul’s eyes went wide.

“Yeah, I could do that!” he said cheerfully. “If I figure out what was in it to make George change into a kid, I can figure out the correct formula to reverse it.” Jenny smiled for the first time that whole day.

“That’s great!” she said but Paul’s face fail flat again. “What’s wrong?” Jenny asked when she noticed the change in her friend. “My mom told me that I can’t use my tools anymore for an entire month! She told me it was my fault that it happened in the first place!” Jenny’s face fell then as well and she slumped onto the bench.

“Well, can’t you do it at school?” Kyle asked and Paul shook his head.

“No, she’s spoken with the teachers and they waived me from having to do any activities involving the lab room.” Kyle’s eyebrow furrowed. Paul’s mother had thought of everything.

“But we’d be helping George, surely she’ll understand that.” Paul shook his head again.

“Once my mom tells me that I can’t do something, there’s no changing her mind.” Jenny let out another long blow.

“She doesn’t have to know.” Kyle mumbled and Paul and Jenny looked at him.

“What do you mean she doesn’t have to know?” Jenny asked. “You want him to disobey his mother’s rules?” Kyle shook his head.

“No, we need to do what’s right and fix George!” Kyle shouted. He knew that it was all his fault, but Paul and Jenny had promised him to always stick by his side. “I know that this is my fault and I’m truly sorry. If I could, I’d try to figure out how to fix George by myself.” Kyle bit his lip and looked away from them embarrassed. “But I can’t do it alone. I need both of you.” Kyle was the most upset about the situation and he should have been the one to do something about it. However, Kyle knew that he’d need to rely on Paul and Jenny. Jenny stared at Kyle for the longest time.

The next day when Kyle, Jenny, and Paul were on a break, they sat under their favorite tree and ate the lunches that they had brought to school.

“So you honestly think the teachers won’t notice us in the lab?” Jenny asked as she drank her lemonade.

“If you and I take turns watching the door, they shouldn’t notice us.” Kyle said, taking a bite out of his apple.

“What about the cameras? The school’s littered with them.” Jenny asked again.

“I’ll take care of that,” Paul interrupted. “If I adjust the frequency on my earpiece, it should interfere with the camera’s processing.”

“I have no idea what that means, but Paul said that it won’t be a problem.” Kyle said looking over at Jenny. Jenny wasn’t completely sure if Kyle’s plan would work. Kyle wanted Jenny and him to take turns manning the door while Paul went to work. They were supposed to liste
n for footprints and if they heard people coming, the look-out was supposed to knock three times on the door and the people inside the room would hide.

“If we get caught doing this, we’ll get expelled.” Jenny said, unwilling to go through with Kyle’s plan. It had too many negative consequences. “We should just wait till Paul gets off of punishment.”

“That’s not fair to George,” Kyle shouted.

“It’s not fair to Paul either.” Jenny countered.

“Please guys,” Paul said finally getting irritated by Paul and Jenny. He’d never seen either one of them this riled up before. “We got to stop arguing and we need to spend more time on thinking about the positives.” Paul said trying to get his friends to relax. “We won’t get caught and we will find the solution.” Jenny looked over at Kyle with a sad face. Kyle was her best friend and she hated that they had argued.

“I’m sorry,” Jenny said with a small voice.

“Me too,” Kyle said. “I get how you feel Jenny, but this will work.” Kyle was sure of it because he was going to work his hardest to make sure things went as planned. Jenny and Kyle grinned at each other.

“That’s the spirit,” Paul said and smiled as well. “That’s the Kyle and Jenny that I know.” For being the youngest, Paul really acted more mature than Kyle and Jenny. He never jumped to conclusions too fast and he always looked at things from all points of views, giving each view its own fair chance. Kyle hoped that he could be like that one day as well.

“Well, when are we going to try this?” Jenny asked. Kyle looked towards the building.

“Not today,” Kyle said. “We should watch the teachers’ patterns. See where they walk and when they’re normally around the lab.” Paul laughed.

“Spoken like a true spy.” Paul said and Kyle grinned. Kyle knew that if they worked together like he knew that they would, then they’d be alright.

  Chapter Two

“Oh what do we have here?” Larry said as soon as Kyle, Paul, and Jenny entered the classroom. Kyle sighed once he saw Larry. Larry has been giving him problems ever since school had started and it had ground worse because of what had happened with George. Kyle decided to ignore Larry, who was standing in front of him looking down at him. “I said… what do we have here?” Larry walked directly in front of Kyle’s line of view.

“Leave me alone, Larry.” Kyle said, trying to step around him.

“He’s so rude today people. Please don’t make me two years old.” The boys that normally hung around Larry laughed when Larry started to pretend to shake with fear.

“Grow up,” Jenny said to Larry behind Kyle and grabbed ahold of Kyle’s arm. Kyle sighed. He had to get saved by Jenny once again. One day soon Kyle would stand up to Larry and show Larry that he wasn’t the best.

“You can’t hide behind that girl forever,” Larry called out just as Mrs. Griffin walked into the classroom with Ms. Richardson’s cat, Sassy, behind her.

“Everyone take your seats.” Mrs. Griffin said as people shuffled to their seats. Mrs. Griffin might have been a little old woman, but she had the power of three fully grown apes. Her words were the law and the students’ followed them without second guessing themselves.

“Thanks,” Kyle muttered to Jenny once they took their seats. Jenny gave Kyle one of her familiar grins.

“Of course,” Jenny was happy to help whenever she could or whenever she was needed.

“Remember what I said,” Paul said once he took his seat. “Larry just wants the attention. Don’t give it to him and he’ll eventually get tired and leave you alone.” Paul apparently knew Larry since he was very young. They lived on the same street and Larry was always treating the normal kids wrong as well. Kyle found it odd that Larry never bothered Paul. He asked Paul if Larry ever bothered him and he said no. Paul didn’t understand it himself why Larry picked on everyone, but him,

“Yeah, well I wish he’d hurry up and get tired of bothering me already.”

“Silence!” Mrs. Griffin voice was heard throughout the room and the noise stopped instantly. “I’ve been gone for a little while and you’re already acting a fool.” Mrs. Griffin had gone on a business trip a few weeks ago and she was just now getting back. Despite all that had happened, she was still her grumpy old self. Sassy walked around Mrs. Griffin’s legs and purred whenever her earpiece buzzed in her ear. Someone was apparently speaking to her and Kyle wanted to know who.

“That’s a super cute cat,” Jenny said quietly. Jenny loved all sorts of animals as long as they were cute and cuddly. Her mother didn’t let her have pets, so she had to just wait till she saw Sassy at school.

“But what’s not cute is your voice!” Mrs. Griffin yelled at Jenny and she blushed and made it as if she zipped up her lips and placed a lock on them. Kyle was surprised that Mrs. Griffin actually heard her. Kyle was sitting right next to Jenny and he barely heard her. When the room was quiet again the students heard a gentle knocking on the door. “Come in!” Mrs. Griffin said and the door was pushed open.

“Hello,” George said as he walked into the room. The students gasped when they saw him. He was still a child of course, but hearing his voice and then seeing him would take a lot of getting used to. Even though he sounded like a grown man, he barely looked old enough to be in kindergarten.

“You poor dear,” Mrs. Griffin said with a frown on her face. She knew what had happened to George, but this was her first time seeing him. “How could someone do this to my star pupil?” she said as George walked over to her and hugged her. It almost looked like a grandmother hugging one of her great… great grandsons.

“It’s nice to see you Mrs. Griffin. It’s been far too long.” George said and walked towards the front of the room. “Hello students,’” George said and everyone let out an awkward greeting. He laughed. “Don’t be like that. You’re acting like you’re ashamed to see me like this.” Kyle wouldn’t say that he was ashamed, more like uncomfortable. “Anyways,” George cleared his voice and began speaking again. “I have a guest here with me today.” George motioned for the guest to enter the classroom.

“They kind of look alike,” Jenny said when a man with a medium brown color beard walked in. The man sort of did resemble the adult George.

“This is my younger brother Dale,” George said and Dale walked over to George and picked him up.

“Well I’m the oldest brother at the moment!” Dale laughed and the class joined in with his laughter. George’s small legs dangled in the air as Dale held him away at arms-length. George flailed his arms in horror and embarrassment.

“Put me down right now!” George yelled, but Dale wasn’t listening.

“He’s kind of cute upset,” Jenny said and giggled.

“I like Dale, he’s a real sport!” Paul said and placed his hands behind his head and grinned. From the looks of it, Dale was also a spy. Kyle knew that Dale was here to share something with the class. He really wished that the laughing died down soon so that he could find out Dale’s purpose there. Completely frustrated now, George kicked Dale in the knee and tripped him once Dale had lost his hold on him.

“Ah!” Dale yelped as his body hit the floor. George wiped invisible dirt off of his clothes and glared at the class.

“Don’t let my size fool you,” he said aggressively. “I am still powerful and quick enough to analyze my situation to find the quickest and most risk free solution.”

“Serves you right,” Mrs. Griffin said once Dale got off of the ground. Apparently she knew both of the brothers and it was apparent who she took a liking to.

“Sorry, I just couldn’t resist it. So which one of these students’ is behind this?” Dale didn’t appear to have been trying to be mean, but Kyle’s face burned hot when Dale asked this.

“There’s nobody to blame,” George said straightening out his pants leg. Dale grinned.

“I’m not blaming them. I want to thank them.” Dale’s playfulness reminded Jenny and Kyle of Paul’s good humor. “I want to thank the stu
dent for giving me the opportunity to be the oldest.” Dale laughed again, but stopped once George gave him a fierce look. Most of the students in the class couldn’t take George’s threatening stares seriously. All of the girls found him to be adorable, while the boys found him to be a shrimp.

“Let’s get to why you’re really here.” George looked at the class then. “Dale is here to provide assistance to you as you figure out a way to transform me back to my normal self.” George tried his best to look at each and every student as he spoked. “Think of this as a little competition.” The word competition caught Kyle’s attention. He leaned up in his seat and paid close attention to George’s next words. “The first student or group to transform me back will get promoted to a higher level.”

“Nobody else needs to try!” Larry said laughing loudly. “We already know that I will be the one who figures it out on my own.” Kyle frowned at Larry’s arrogance. There was no way that Kyle was going to lose to Larry or be bested by Larry. Larry didn’t know the true meaning behind being a spy so there was no way that Larry would win. Kyle, Jenny, and Paul were going to figure it out first. Kyle would make sure that they had everything that they needed to accomplish this task. He had to win for his sake, George’s sake, Jenny’s and Paul’s sake.
