“Relax, Cal,” Mike drawled from behind him. “I’ve got your back.”

Sheena let her fingers twine in Cal’s hair, pulling him to her, giving herself up to the kiss they shared and not caring who witnessed it. She angled her head and body even closer as he deepened the kiss, teasing her—and making her crave more.
“Cal—” she murmured close to his lips as she broke away. She was not prepared for what that kiss had done to her. Her heart beat so that she wondered if she might faint for the second time in her life.
“What’s wrong?” Cal whispered, giving her a kiss at the corner of her mouth.
All the fears fled, and the memory of her ordeal with Richard Purl dimmed in the light of this new love she shared with Callen Chandler. She placed a hand between them over his heart, feeling the same wild, erratic beating that, ironically, felt perfectly in time with hers.
She wanted him. The thought surprised her with its suddenness, and the intensity that accompanied it was almost unbearable.
“Sheena?”
She shook her head, her eyes holding the promise of beautiful, unspeakable things to come that she didn’t even know how to describe with words.
He gave her a slow, lazy grin—not needing the words, then laughed aloud at their unspoken understanding. Taking her hand, he started down the steps. “Do we know each other well enough for what we’re about to do?”
Her shyness had disappeared. For a moment, she wondered at the brazen attraction she felt for him, but he squeezed her hand in reassurance. When she looked into his eyes, she saw that his feeling must be the same as hers by the look he wore.
Their steps grew quicker as she hurried to keep up with him. Her brogue deepened as she spoke. “You know my heart, Callen. And I know yours. Aye, I think the time has come.”
He gave her a wicked grin. The anticipation that look created within her was almost more than Sheena could stand.
“I’ll race you,” he said, pulling her along as he began to lope.
She laughed aloud, and the breeze scattered her joy to the forest beyond, to the welcoming porch of Livvie’s home, back to the townspeople who stood shaking their heads on Main Street.
“You should know you can’t beat me, Cal. I’m flying.” She threw open the front door.
He never let go of her hand. “So am I, Sheena,” he said, just before he kicked the door shut behind them.
