“I know. That’s why I wanted to catch you now. Happy Valentine’s Day,” he said from the other end. His voice was raspy like he’d just woken up.

“Happy Valentine’s Day to you too, sweetie. I’ll see you at the studio later,” Kem said.

She put on her shoes and headed toward the kitchen.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Kyle said to her when she entered the kitchen.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Dad,” Kem responded. “What’s all this?”

Kem noticed the flowers and breakfast on the table.

“I wanted to treat you to breakfast before you got your day started. Plus, I knew you wouldn’t have time to cook before you left.”

“Thanks, Dad, I really appreciate it.”

While she was eating, her dad returned with an envelope and a red heart-shaped box of candy.

“I wasn’t too sure if you liked chocolate but I took my chances.”

“Oh, Dad, you didn’t have to do this.”

  “I wanted to.”

Kem hugged him and took the items. “And I love chocolate by the way. Sometimes I eat too much.”

She opened the card and read the outside. “To my daughter, with love.” Kem looked at Kyle. “I feel guilty. I didn’t get you anything.”

“Being here with you is my gift.”

Kem’s eyes watered. She opened the card and read the inside. She got up and wrapped her arms around her dad’s neck. “I love you too, Daddy.”

“You don’t know how happy I am to hear that.”

“You should come down to the studio. I’ll send a car back later to get you.”

“Well, I sort of already made plans with Edna.”

“Edna’s on schedule to be there today, so just have her bring you while you two are out.”

  “I sure will.”

“Well, Dad, I have to go. Remember the alarm code is one…nine…four…four.”

“That’s your mother’s birth year, so you know I won’t forget,” Kyle noted.

She squeezed his hand. “See you later.”

Kem grabbed her things and left for work.

Brent stopped by Kem’s house to pick up Kyle. Kyle got in the car.

“Did you get it?” Brent asked.

“I got it right here.” Kyle patted his pocket.

  “Great.”

  “Where’s Edna?” Kyle asked.

“She’s going to meet us at the studio,” Brent informed him.

When they arrived at the studio, Brent introduced Kyle to the cast members and crew that he hadn’t met.

Ellen said, “Mr. Phillips, it’s a pleasure to see you again.”

  “Thanks, Ellen.”

  “You remembered my name.”

  “Of course. You’re unforgettable.”

“Well, if there’s anything you need while you’re here, don’t hesitate to let me know.”

“Ellen,” Kem’s voice rang over the intercom. “You’re needed up front.”

  “Duty calls.” Ellen rushed away.

“Knock knock. Look who I have here,” Brent said as they entered Kem’s open door.

“Dad. Brent. Come on in.” Kem stood.

“Kyle, I have to go get dressed for my scenes. Aunt Edna should be here shortly.”

“Thanks, Brent, for escorting an old man around.”

“Baby, I’ll see you later.” Brent winked at Kem as he walked to his trailer where Aunt Edna was waiting for him.

“I’ve got everything you need. The rest is up to you,” she informed him.

“Thanks, Aunt Edna,” Brent responded as he went into putting his plan in action.

Kem looked at the script several times. Nowhere had she written a Valentine’s Day scene. So, why was Brent holding a big bouquet of heart-shaped balloons in one hand and flowers in the other?

“Who changed my script?” Kem asked.

“I did.” Brent walked off set toward her as people moved out of his way to let him by.

“Brent, what are you doing? This is costing the network money.”

  “I’ve cleared it.”

“Cleared it with who?” Kem asked. “It didn’t get cleared by me.”

Aunt Edna grabbed Kem’s arm. “Calm down, dear. It’s all right.”

Brent handed the balloons and flowers in her direction. “These are for you.”

“But I’m going to hold them for now,” Aunt Edna said as she took the items from Brent.

Brent got down on one knee.

“Brent, you don’t have to do this.” Kem’s heart began to race.

“Baby, let the man say what he has to say,” Kyle said.

Brent held Kem’s hand. “Kem, we’ve both made some mistakes, but asking you to marry me was never one of them. I promise to be truthful at all times even when it hurts. Kem, will you please do me the honor of being my wife? Will you marry me?”

Brent pulled out a ring from his pocket and Kem noticed it was the same ring she’d thrown at him. “Baby, yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Kem planted small kisses on his lips. Although the room was filled with other people, their lips locked and they kissed as if they were the only two in the room.

Kyle cleared his throat. “As your father, I don’t know if I want to see you two making out in front of me.”

  People around them laughed.

Ellen wiped tears off her face with a tissue. “I’m so happy y’all got back together.”

“Me too, Ellen. Me too.” Kem looked at Brent and widened her smile.

“Congratulations, dear,” Aunt Edna said as she hugged Kem.

“So you knew about this, didn’t you?” Kem asked Kyle.

“Yes. It was my job to find the ring so he could propose.”

“What if he hadn’t found the ring?” Kem looked at Brent and asked.

“I guess I would have been out of more money but I was proposing to you today, with a new ring or the original. It didn’t matter.”

  They all laughed.

Brent and Kem wanted to be alone so they slipped away to her office.

  Kem locked the door.

“I know one way to celebrate us being re-engaged. Is that even a word?” Kem asked.

“If it’s not, it is now.” Brent unfastened his pants while she was removing her dress.

They ignored the knock at the door because this scene wasn’t meant to be interrupted. They celebrated their engagement by making love on the casting couch in Kem’s office.
