Jess held her for a long time, then finally, they broke away.
“I have one question left.” Jess leaned back against the counter.
Jil mirrored her movements, finding a spot against the island. “I know. I have the same question.”
“About the Monet?”
Jil pursed her lips. “God, she was full of secrets, wasn’t she?”
Jess sighed. “Maybe it’s better that we don’t know. Innocent by reason of ignorance, right?”
“What I wouldn’t give for just one more hour with her.” Jil sighed. Tears welled up in her eyes and she let them fall freely—a sudden storm that would pass if she just let it come.
Jess laid a hand on her arm. “I hardly think you’d waste the time…”
“No, that’s really the first thing I’d ask her.” Jil laughed through her tears. “Elise, tell me that story about how you stole a Monet?”

About the Author
Stevie Mikayne writes fiction with a literary edge, combining her obsession with traditional literature with a love of dynamic characters and strong language. She is currently pursuing a PhD in creative writing from Lancaster University in the UK. Her first mystery novel, UnCatholic Conduct, was short-listed for a Lambda Literary Award.
