CHAPTER 1
Leah swirled the stick around in her rum and coke, and willed her body to relax. She knew this was a dangerous place.
She leaned back, catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror behind the bar. She had to admit, the makeover had helped. Truth was, Leah was a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl. She hated that putting her body on display was necessary for her success.
But the costume, as she'd come to think of it, helped. Expert make up played up her Japanese half, while a low-cut, black dress and push up bra played up the German. She was unaccustomed to men hitting on her, and was certain that the few who'd already tried thought her a terrible bitch. They wanted her, and it wasn't their fault. It was a side effect. And they were not the reason that she'd gotten so dolled up to go to a dive bar.
No, the reason she'd come here had just made his entrance.
He stood a bit over six feet, wiry and muscular. His Hispanic heritage was written over his face. He sauntered into the bar, slapping hands with several of the rough men who'd populated the various tables, offering manly hugs to those he knew well. He spoke a mixture of Spanish and English, one that she had to listen carefully to follow.
He was the most dangerous man here.
It had been only a few months ago that the changes began. Through no known algorithm, certain men suddenly discovered they had developed powers, like some sort of comic book super heroes. The world was scrambling trying to discover what was causing the changes to these men. Governments were struggling to get a handle on it, worldwide. They had to somehow gain control over these extremely powerful individuals.
The powers were as different as the men born with them. One man would suddenly discover he could recall any word he read. Another could hear the thoughts of others, invading his mind. These were the lesser powers, not as worrisome. No, it was the man who could freeze anything he touched or the one who could move faster than the eye could see that struck fear in the hearts of the populace. And these were simply the men who'd revealed what they could do to the prime time news, no doubt looking for fame and fortune.
Idiots. Leah knew that the key to living a normal life would be to keep any power that one had completely secret. But what would she know? The news said that women were simply not being mutated this way. After all, there'd been dozens of men coming forward, showing what they could do. Yet not a single female. Surely that must mean women were incapable of being changed, the news argued. Even in these short months, it had become the truth, mostly because the news said so.
It made Leah's last mission incredibly easy. He never saw it coming.
These men were no comic book heroes. Sadly, the average individual, when suddenly presented with great power, well, they rarely were terribly responsible with it. The news was now full of stories of robberies, murders, kidnappings, rapes. The government was now taking anyone who showed signs of the gift into custody immediately, out of fear of what they might do to the populace.
The world was being overrun by super villains. No one stood against them. No one, except Leah.
The man whom she was following was one of the worst offenders. He used his powers, those of fire, to take leadership of one of the largest gangs of the city. He'd used his gift to unify not only that group, but several other gangs into one large conglomeration that was causing havoc all over the city.
Leah was going to stop him.
She took another sip of her drink, and let her eyes very slowly wander over to him. She did not need to appear too eager. This man was predator, not prey. Finally, his eyes moved to the bar, catching her eye.
She quickly looked down and away, suddenly becoming incredibly absorbed in her drink. It was all he needed. He slid onto the stool next to her without invitation.
“Hola Chica,” he began, leaning in. “What's a pretty young lady like you doing in a dump like this?”
Waiting for you. She thought. She swirled her stick and let the blush creep into her cheeks. “Having a drink.”
He laughed, and threw his arm around her shoulders, possessively. “Some mixed drink shit, eh? Let me get you something stronger.”
“I... I don't...” she began, and he laughed, laying a finger to her lips to silence her. This close, she could tell he'd already been drinking for a while. Many of the patron's eyes moved to the two of them, watching the show.
“Bring the lady some tequila, eh? She wants to drink, let's do it right!” The crowd was certainly with him, as the bartender pulled a bottle from the top shelf. She shook her head quickly, holding up her hands in protest.
“I'm not, I don't drink tequila...” She began, once more playing the innocent. Her research on him had suggested that he enjoyed corrupting the naive. She would play the part.
Six shot glasses suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and the bartender expertly began filling each to the brim.
“Come on now, it's my treat!” He leaned even closer, his lips a mere whisper against her ears. “And it's rude in my culture to refuse a gift...” He let his tongue slowly run against her ear.
She suppressed a shudder. It would not do to show her interest now, not yet. He preferred his girls reluctant. Of course, after he'd used them, he'd toss them away and begin the hunt anew. She felt the twinges of lust already growing. There was nothing hotter than a man who knew he couldn't be refused.
She reached forward and took one of the shot glasses. She slowly raised it to her lips, as he watched intently. She poured the liquid down her throat and didn't have to fake the coughing it caused.
He laughed and slapped the bar, once more getting the crowd involved. The mostly male patrons seemed to find the whole scenario hilarious. He was one of their boys, one of their heroes. And hey, they'd always help one of their boys to get some. That too, she'd expected.
“Are you going to introduce yourself?” She asked, as he gestured for her to take the second shot glass. She made sure to slur her words ever so slightly. The intense tequila caused her cheeks to flush even redder, which helped her innocent look. She held the glass in her fingers, but did not raise it to her lips. He lay his strong hand over hers, enveloping it. The other arm was still tightly around her shoulders.
“Mmm, after you drink that next shot, maybe.” He chuckled. She did as he asked, and it was a far smoother drink. While she sat the glass down, he began to run his fingertips up and down the back of her hand, slowly moving up her forearm. She felt the goose flesh rise under his touch.
“I'm Leah...” she began, and he let his fingers move even higher, slowly caressing her shoulders and all the way to her cheeks. He cupped one of the cheeks and pulled her face towards his own. His dark eyes were all intensity, and all for her.
“One more and I'll tell you my name,” he promised.
She hesitantly did as he asked, making her movements slower, her speech even more slurred. He did not need to know that she could drink all night and feel nothing. The extremely high tolerance to alcohol was a gift she'd picked up along the way.
“Mmm. Good girl.” He chuckled softly, and cupped her jaw. He turned her away from him, so that he could lean in again, his voice a bare whisper agai
nst her ear. “They call me The Fireman...”
She flinched in his grip, but he held her tight. The arm around her shoulders, the hand against her jaw, all held fast, making sure she couldn't run. After all, he'd just admitted to being one of the most wanted and dangerous men in the city. He was capable of anything.
And he liked to see her fear.
“Stop squirming girl, it only makes you hotter. And you know I like things hot...” He laughed again.
“You're one of the cursed!” She exclaimed, incredulous.
His eyes grew dark then, narrowing. “We prefer the term gifted. After all, the ability to set fires with your mind? How could that possibly be a curse?”
She'd upset him, she knew. Still, what other reaction would an innocent have? It was just the game. “I.. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult you,” she stammered. She would play to his villainous ego, let him believe he was in power.
“Course not, Chica. Make it up to me by finishing the tequila, eh?”
She looked down at the three full shots still sitting in front of them. “I... I thought that was for you?”
He laughed again and shook his head. “All yours.”
“I don't think I should...” she protested.
Once again he turned her face to his, his eyes were heated and angry. She knew that he was a man who was accustomed to getting his way.
“Would you truly refuse the most powerful man in the city?” He growled.
Danger radiated from his every pore. Though he was certainly powerful, he was not the most powerful man in the city. Not even the most powerful in the room.
He obviously wanted to do this the hard way.
She slowly reached forward, picking up the fourth shot glass. She downed it quickly, as if she thought that would make it's effects any less. He began to nuzzle her neck as she reached forward, picking up the fifth. He kept whispering in her ear as she brought that one too to her lips.
“You ever been fucked, little girl?” He chuckled, whispering in her ear.
“Little Girl?” I'm closer to forty than thirty, idiot. Still, she was glad of her Asian heritage, it was confusing the fuck out of him. She didn't answer him, but put her hands in her lap primly, looking away from him. It only spurred him on more.
“I don't have to be so gentle, you understand. I could take you, throw you over the bar, hike up that dress and fuck you until you've broken in two.” His fingers slowly trailed down, from the hollow of her neck to her line of cleavage. She'd never been groped so blatantly in public, but none of the others made comment. No doubt they too knew how dangerous this man was. She let the fifth shot roll down her throat.
“No one here could stop me.”
She set the glass down, widening her eyes as if in fear, finding his. It was growing difficult for her to suppress her own lusts.
“Why didn't you...?” She asked, her speech drunken, though her body sober.
“Ah, I'm rather old fashioned, I suppose. I'm a gentleman after all.”
She suppressed a snort. A gentleman wouldn't coerce a woman into drinking far beyond their limit. She leaned into him, playing it up.
“Just one more...” he urged.
She shook her head.
“No?” He picked it up, and brought it to his own lips. He acted as if he were going to drink, still watching her. Suddenly, he grabbed her jaw again, his fingers prying it apart. She fought back weakly. He forced the drink down her throat, strangling her.
She lurched forward, coughing, and he finally released his grip. When finally she could breathe again, he was standing putting on his coat.
“You're..” she coughed again, struggling to get the words out. “leaving so soon?”
“Me?” He grinned cruelly. “No, not me. Us. We are leaving.”
He's making this too easy. She knew she had him now. The hunt was on.
“I can't. I need to call a cab...” She got to her feet wobbly.
“I'll walk you home.”
“You don't know where I live...” she protested.
A smirk touched his lips. “It doesn't matter, chica.” He held his hand out to her. The hollering from the rest of the bar started back up, as well as the calls of exactly what he should do to her. She noticed the faces of several other men, ones she'd turned down, glaring at her. But even they did not look on The Fireman with hostility. It would be suicide.
She took his hand.
CHAPTER 2
Leah didn't have much trouble faking the drunken walk while wearing five inch heels. She had plenty of skills, but balance was not one of them. The Fireman offered her his arm and let her lean against him heavily as they moved through the darkened streets. He had not asked her where she lived, nor was she giving any directions.
“Where are we going?” She finally asked.
He was silent for a very long time, so she repeated the question. “Mmm.. it's a surprise.”
She frowned at that. A good girl would not be going off into the night, alone, with a man she'd just met. She especially would not be going off with a man who was a known danger to the city. She wondered if he was on to her or if he truly believed in the power of tequila. Further and further they went, and she realized that he was going around in circles. He doubled back twice. It was interesting, clearly he believed her to be so far gone that she would not be able to find her way back.
Finally, after nearly half an hour of walking, he turned into a darkened alleyway. It was too small for a car to pass through, but big enough for a few dumpsters from the adjacent buildings. He shoved her against the brick wall, hard.
She opened her mouth to protest, yet again, and he silenced her by shoving his whole mouth against hers. She felt his tongue forcing her lips to open, exploring her mouth. Her hands were against his chest, pushing him away, but he didn't care. He was far stronger than she, what could she do?
But she was exactly where she wanted to be.
She could have ended this whole charade before they left the bar, but Leah had her own dark needs. There was nothing better than a man taking exactly what he wanted, no matter her own desires. So she would let him, just to see how desperate and depraved he could go. It was fascinating to her, thrilling to see what a man would do when he truly believed he could not be stopped.
Finally he broke the kiss, a grin on his face. She smacked him, right in the jaw.
“How dare you!” She shrieked, following it up by another smack. Would he keep going, despite her protests?
His eyes began to glow with fury. It was exactly what she needed. She need only push a bit further.
“How dare I? I am the most powerful man in this city! And I took an interest in you, you cunt!” He jerked both her hands over her head, pinning them against the hard brick wall. He pressed his whole body against hers, and she could feel just how much he enjoyed treating her this roughly. She cried out, just as the innocent would be expected to.
“You're gonna love it, I promise”
It was if he felt then like he needed to slow down, just a bit. He wanted to drag out the fun. It didn't matter to Leah. The skin of his hands was touching the bare skin of her wrists. He didn't even realize how much danger he was in. He was her prey, not she his.
He began to run his hands over her body, grabbing and squeezing her breasts, mounding them. He saw her nipples harden, and began to pinch and pull at them, twisting them roughly. He was searching for the gasps of pain to escape her throat, and pushing them even further.
“Come on now, chica. Get on your knees for me?”
She widened her eyes in shock. “I am not some alleyway whore! And I don't do things like that!”
“Bah, I was so sweet to you, girlie. I bought you all that fine liquor. Don't I deserve something in return?”
“But, I didn't ask for any of that! You insisted!”
He shrugged, still leaning over her heavily, keeping her hands over her head. “You could have said no, could have left.”
Deep inside her mind, she laug
hed darkly. She didn't allow any of the mirth to touch her face. He truly was a villain, and she was going to love taking him down.
He lay his palm on top of her head, slowly but firmly pushing her to her knees. She fought back, as any innocent would, but still found her bare knees in layers of filth and trash that coated the alleyway. She was face to face with his crotch as he leaned one hand against the wall, the other slowly undoing his belt.
“You're gonna love this, chica. You'll thank me for it...”
She swallowed as he unzipped his pants and pulled his already hard member out. It was an impressive specimen, as he'd said. Long, thick, and engorged to a nearly purple color, he began to stroke it in front of her face. Up and down his hand moved, menacingly, as if it were the very weapon he was going to use to slay her.
