“Anything. Gonna give you everything. You and Chris. Mine. My world, baby. My whole world.”
Chapter Eight
Oscar
Handle of the stroller gripped tight in one hand, he bent his neck as he called her name, “Lindy,” so when she looked up questioningly, he could take her mouth. He loved doing that, surprising her with affection, especially out in the open where everyone could see. She’d told him one night that looking back at her time spent with the jackhole, he hadn’t wanted any public displays, which in retrospect she understood was a telltale. Oscar liked moving them along the path of being together in a way that there was no comparison between the before and the now.
When he regretfully ended the kiss, they’d stopped stock-still on the sidewalk, and the expression on her face was everything he wanted, soft and warm, loving and sweet, and oh-so-slightly dazed. He jostled her with the arm wrapped around her shoulder, prompting her with a gentle, “Say yes.”
She blinked and frowned, then the corner of her mouth tipped up in that damned crooked grin that always, always took his breath away. Lifting one eyebrow, she told him, “Yes?”
He nodded and quickly dropped his gaze to Chris, who he wagered would be patient for about thirty more seconds before he started yelling and rocking back and forth in his impatient efforts to get the stroller moving again. Their boy knew they were headed to the playground, and he loved the tiny jungle gym there. Oscar dropped his arm and grabbed her right hand, placed it on the stroller’s handle, then dug in his pocket. Wrapping his hand around her left one, he raised it to his lips and softly kissed the backs of her knuckles as he slipped the ring into place. “You’re gonna marry me.”
Lindy gasped and stared at him, but the pleasure in her surprise was exactly what he’d been hoping to see.
“Aren’t you supposed to do that the other way around? And isn’t it intended to be a question?”
“Have you met me?” He scoffed, then leaned in to kiss her softly, holding her fingers to his chest, right over his thundering heart. If she felt his nervousness, she didn’t show it, kissing him back then smiling against his lips when Chris yodeled his displeasure down the street, the stroller making a racket as he wiggled around. “When do I follow the normal path on anything? I met you when you were havin’ my baby.” He didn’t miss the softening of her expression, something that happened every time he called Chris his, and he couldn’t wait until he stopped getting that, which would mean she understood it was just how he felt. “Moved you into my house before we had a single date”—she rolled her eyes—“and told you just how I much I loved you before we slept together.” She tipped her head to the side, and he shrugged, kissing her again. “Okay, maybe that last one was the right order, but you gotta admit, I’m all about the thrill of you.”
“The thrill of me?”
“Oh, yeah, baby. Every day with you?” Chris yodeled again, voice rising to a squawk at the end, and Oscar saw the stroller jitter forwards and back a few inches. He turned and wrapped his arm around Lindy again, taking up the happy duty of pushing his son towards a place where he could play safely and Oscar could feel up the boy’s momma happily. “Every day’s a thrill.”
