  “Which gentleman?”

“The tall one with the twinkling eyes.”

  “He went away.”

“He was always kind to me. His voice, most of all. And his kiss, the one he gave me in the morning, when he woke up beside me. I miss him.”

“So do I, Mom. So do I.”

They had reached the end of the point, where the shoreline curved toward the water and headed for the pier. They made the wide circle to turn around and head back to the house. “It’s too bad Kendra can’t be here. She loved the beach.”

  “She still does.”

  “You’ve met her?”

When Kendra nodded, Emily stopped her with a gentle touch. “I have only one regret in life.”

  “What’s that, Mom?”

  “Kendra never knew her sister.”

Kendra swallowed hard. She feared to ask. “Her ... sister?"

“Her sister ... her sister ... her twin sister ... Kayla.”
