by Jackson, David

  But they don’t know.

They don’t know about the things he’s done. They don’t know about the havoc he’s wreaked. They don’t know about the violence he has unleashed – violence he never imagined he would be capable of perpetrating.

He has changed. Was a time, he was just a cop doing his job. But things have conspired against him. He has stepped across a line. Several lines.

With Proust, and then with Bartok, he played the parts of both judge and jury.

But there were a couple of times he came within a hair’s breadth of putting a bullet in both of their skulls.

He wonders how long it will be before he becomes an executioner too.

  Acknowledgements

A huge and heartfelt thank-you to Wayne Brookes, my new editor at Pan Macmillan. Changing editors can be an unsettling time for all concerned, but I’m more than happy to be working (and socializing!) with Wayne, who is a larger-than-life character with an unrivalled record of looking after the authors in his charge. Thanks also to the rest of the Pan Mac team for the incredible work they have done yet again, and especially to Louise Buckley for her extensive editorial comments that have improved the novel enormously. A huge shout-out to all my Twitter pals: they are too numerous to mention individually, but I will be eternally grateful for their support and friendship. Finally, it would not be possible for many of us to remain as authors were it not for the love, encouragement and understanding of our partners. My undying gratitude goes to my wife, Lisa, who is with me every step of the way.
