The police took him to the hospital, took his statement while he was being attended to. When the Doctor said he would be all right and no need to admit him, the police transported him to the station.
A few hours later, they let him walk. They were satisfied when everything he told them checked out. He was free.
He walked a block away from the police station and called Melissa.
“Melissa, baby, I need a ride.”
“It’s Percy, who else?”
“No, I can’t get Benny to do it. He’s on a date and he probably left his cell at home.”
The voice on the other end squealed. “Benny’s got a date? You kidding me? No. I’m amazed. Okay, where are you?”
“I’m about a block from the police station. Melissa, I’m hungry. Any chance you could spring for a meal?”
“It’s eleven p.m. I’ve eaten hours ago.”
“I been busy. I’ve been shot at. And I’m hungry.”
“Shot at?”
“Yes, shot at.I was hit too. And Well, maybe not directly hit, but grazed. Get this, I woke up with a dead man on top of me. I got lucky, Sweetie, else I’d be dead now just like them other two. Come get me and I’ll tell you all about it.”
“All right. I can’t pass up a story like that. This better be on the level. I’ll be there as quick as I can.”
“Thanks, Sweetie.” He hung up and grinned. Ahh, weasel, my man, you still got it.
