The Lone Wolf's Craving Page 16

Tiggy glanced over at them, bent slightly at the waist to keep pressure off her sutures. “Ugh. That was not fun. Thanks for holding her for me.”

“I told you we needed to wait for a nurse,” Nick chided softly.

“I am a nurse. Besides, there are two doctors right here in the room.”

Nick helped her settle back in her bed with an amused sigh. “The longer they keep you, the better.”

“Oh, no. I’m ready to leave. I have a wedding to plan.”

Kate stood and carried the baby over to her, gently placing the child in her arms. “The wedding is still four months away. You’ll be exhausted for the next couple of months so you need to take it easy.”

“She’s going to be a good baby, aren’t you, love?” She gazed down at the baby with adoration. They’d named her Poppy, in honor of fallen soldiers everywhere.

“Well, we’d better let you get some rest.” Kate stood and held her hand out for Luke, who ignored it, wrapping his left arm around her waist instead and tugging her close.

Nick grinned. “Thank you for coming. It means a lot to both of us.”

“I wouldn’t have missed it. Besides, this is where I belong.” She wrapped her arms around Luke’s waist and returned his squeeze with a smile.

Picking up his cane, he put it to the floor and took a step toward the door. Kate matched his pace perfectly, trying neither to push him forward nor slow him down. His hand relished the warm, solid feel of the wood beneath his hand. Kate had bought him a fancy carved cane in the States with a secret engraving beneath the handle that no one knew about but them: Luke ♥s Kate.

Truer words had never been written.

Who would have thought what he’d deemed a sign of weakness had actually become a symbol of strength? Because it was only after he’d accepted his limitations that he’d been able to open himself up to true and lasting happiness. And been free to embrace it.

With a woman who was strong and courageous enough for both of them.
