Then, she stared up at him. Blinking. Waiting.

“What?” he asked, the early stages of realization dawning over him. He looked down at his hand on her stomach.

At Rose’s hand pressed over his.

At his and hers, hers and his, back and forth until he wasn’t sure where one ended and the other began.

“Is this your way of telling me…?”

Her fingers were shaking. She nodded. “Brent, I’m pregnant.”

Immediately, the smile she’d been trying to bite down beamed out of her. Even brighter than the daylight lights the film crew had set up.

  “Are you serious?”

“Very,” she said. “I’ve been to the doctor to confirm it and everything.”

When Brent stared at her, eyes wide, wordless, Rose took over speaking.

“We weren’t planning this,” she stammered. “So, I wanted to make sure I was positively positive before I told you. No sense scaring you for nothing.”

  “Scaring me?” he repeated.

  Was he scared?

Yes. Yes, he was. That was easy to tell straight away.

But he was also thrilled. Beyond thrilled—ecstatic.

“This is incredible news,” he said. “The best surprise I’ve ever had.”

“Really?” Rose’s eyes were misty and she was blinking to beat back the tears. “Because I know we didn’t really talk about this. And you were just saying you have catching up to do as a dad. But you’re so great with Susanna. She loves you. And I know you’ll be a great father. So I’m just saying—”

Brent leaned forward and kissed Rose, cutting her anxious ramble short. He could feel her smiling against his lips.

“I’m excited. I swear. And only a little bit nervous.”

“I think that’s normal,” she whispered. “I am, too.”

He kissed her again because it seemed like the only right thing to do.

“Do you want to tell everyone? When we can talk above a whisper again, of course,” she said when they broke apart, eyeing the crew member who was still standing on the porch, making sure everyone stayed quiet. “Your whole family is here, so it would be a good time.”

Brent looked around at his family again.

Sara and Joey had moseyed on over to see Eliza and Oliver. Sara was holding Summer while Joey and Oliver stood under a nearby tree, each holding a beer.

Holly was playing a game of Silent Tag with the kids in the back corner of the lawn furthest from the filming area.

When Brent looked back to Rose, he shook his head. “No. Let’s wait.”

“You want to?” she asked. “It’s completely up to you. I’m fine either way.”

He nodded, even more sure. “I’m positive. We’ll all be together plenty of times. We can tell them later. For now, let’s keep it our little secret.”

“All clear!” the crew member on the porch called.

Immediately, the yard burst into noise. The little girls screamed like they’d been holding in the noise for a lifetime. Even Sara immediately coughed into her elbow a few times, waking up Summer, who promptly began to cry.

It was instant chaos. Brent couldn’t help but laugh.

Rose grinned and looked down at her stomach where Brent’s hand was still resting. She rubbed her thumb over the back of his hand.

“Yeah,” she murmured happily. “Our little secret.”
